US Open Women’s Singles QF
Six of the last eight women in the US Open aren’t supposed to be in the quarterfinals – not according to the betting odds and sports betting pundits expecting the top seeds to dominate.
Despite little expectations, however, Petra Kvitova, Madison Keys, Anastasija Sevastova, Coco Vandeweghe, Sloane Stephens and Kaia Kanepi will be determined to prove a point when they step on the hard court at Flushing Meadows.
They already surprised betting websites with their run up to this stage, and there’s no telling what else we can see from them!
Sloane Stephens vs Anastasija Sevastova
This is the first time that these two players will fight and both will fancy their chances when they meet this Wednesday.
Sevastova is coming off a victory over Maria Sharapova and should be in high spirits after coming back from a set down. However, Stephens has the advantage playing on home soil, something that proved crucial in her semifinal bid in the Cincinnati Masters two weeks ago.
The issue for the 24-year-old American, though, is her lack of matches this season, and Sevastova could exploit it and make Stephens run a lot just like she did against Sharapova.
This battle could end up close, but going for Sevastova on Asian Handicap +1.50 @ 1.50 seems to be the better choice.
Petra Kvitova vs Venus Williams
The older Williams sister knows how to play on the big stage, and she should be able to show it when she faces two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova.
The 27-year-old Czech, of course, still poses a threat to Williams considering that she leads their head-to-head record, 4-1; not to mention that she took down US Open favourite Garbine Muguruza in the Round of 16 to grab her biggest win since returning to action.
Nonetheless, Venus is enjoying a consistent year in the major events this 2017 – reaching the finals of both Wimbledon and the Australian Open – so it’s difficult to imagine seeing her pack her bags this early, especially on her turf. Go for Williams on Money Line odds at 2.13.
Karolina Pliskova vs Coco Vandeweghe
Pliskova breezed through Jennifer Brady in Round 4, needing only 13 games to win, and all odds point that she can maintain her terrific form and stay in contention for the title. She’s the World No.1 for a reason.
American star Vandeweghe has a fighting chance if she can avoid stuffing her unforced errors. Her service game also clicked well the last time out and should be a useful weapon when she meets the Czech top seed.
Vandeweghe has the ability to win this match, but I think the momentum is on Pliskova’s side after playing her best game so far in the tournament. With that in mind, Pliskova on Asian Handicap -1.50 @ 2.42 is an enticing punt to make.
Kaia Kanepi vs Madison Keys
At 418th in the world, no one would have thought that Kanepi would reach this stage. But, she won seven matches to make it to the last eight and write the unlikeliest Cinderella story of the 2017 edition of this Grand Slam.
Keys, on the other hand, is having a brilliant campaign, showing in back-to-back comeback victories against Elena Vesnina and Elina Svitolina that she has what it takes to be the next big star in the sport.
Both players possess the power to make this an interesting all-out battle, though I believe Kanepi has a better return game to counter whatever Keys will throw at her.
