Shanghai Masters: Blockbuster Matches Ahead in Shanghai!

countdown banner

Huge matches are in store as we approach the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters where some of ATP’s young, brightest stars are going to face off some of their idols.

Legends Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have already advanced and they will have to carry their Big 3 mantle especially since Rafael Nadal was forced to sit this one out due to a wrist injury.

Several veteran players such as Gael Monfils, David Goffin, and the comebacking Andy Murray failed to move on after they were dealt with tough draws in the earlier rounds.

On the other hand, young turks in Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Dominic Thiem have displayed their superb form as they’ve advanced to the quarterfinals as well.

As we reach the climax of the said tournament, SBOBET is here to provide you some of the latest updates prior to the matches ahead.

Dominic Thiem on a roll

The fifth-ranked Dominic Thiem has been on a tear over these past few weeks. As of this writing, the Austrian sensation is on a six-game winning streak and the Shanghai Masters 2019 odds of him making it to the finals are very high.

It’s worth noting that Thiem is having a great season for this year. The 26-year-old went toe-to-toe with Rafael Nadal in the French Open last June and he recently won the Beijing Open by beating Stefano Tsitsipas.

All of these achievements came after he decided to replace his long-time coach Gunter Bresnik earlier this year. Now working with Nicolas Massu, Thiem improved his overall form by being more unpredictable on the tennis court.

“I think that my game got more unpredictable. At certain times I had the feeling opponents know where I’m going to play. I am adding some options to my game now, like some dropshots, some other shots which I wouldn’t hit before,” said Thiem.

“I think I’m probably having the best season of my career so far points-wise and also results-wise. I’m looking forward for everything what comes next,” he added.

Dominic Thiem is set to face off against the 13th-ranked Matteo Berrettini in the next round for their second match ever. Their last encounter was back in the 2018 French Open where Thiem defeated Berrettini in the second round.

Stefanos Tsitsipas looking for an upset

After a runner-up finish in the Beijing Open, this time, Stefanos Tsitsipas will face the daunting task in trying to eliminate Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

The Serbian is back into his otherworldly form as he is gunning for a fifth career Shanghai Open title. He recently claimed the Japan Open by winning handily against John Millman in straight sets.

Djokovic looks to be in great shape by having no ill-effects from his previous shoulder injury and it is unfortunate that Tsitsipas might suffer the wrath of the Serbian icon.

But don’t expect for the 21-year-old to fold easily on this one.

The Greek tennis player is currently 1-1 against Djoker as he won against him in their first hard-court meeting last year in Toronto. Djokovic got his revenge this year, however, in the Madrid Masters.

Like Djokovic, Tsitsipas is also on a roll having earned five Top 30 wins in the past week, after earning only five of them between the start of Rome in May and during the Beijing Open.

He is also the youngest player to defeat each member of the Big 3. Now, he can do it in a single year if he beats Djokovic on this one, especially having beaten Federer at the Australian Open and Nadal during the Madrid Masters.

This figure to be one of those matches that might produce some of the top Shanghai Masters 2019 highlights!

Roger Federer faces a young upstart

We all know that Roger Federer has had a tough draw in the Shanghai Masters, and it won’t come easier now as he will face a budding star in Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals.

He had a hard time in his last match against David Goffin. Federer was pushed in the first set, but he was able to put away the pesky Goffin for good in the succeeding set.

There is a lot of stake for these two players in this match. Federer, who is a two-time Shanghai titlist, will be trying to break his 3-3 head-to-head deadlock with Zverev. He is also trying to make the semis for the first time since the Wimbledon.

As for Zverev, he’s looking to make a return to the Nitto ATP Finals in London for the third consecutive year. The German player currently holds the final qualifying spot in the ATP Race to London with 2,435 points.

Despite winning their last encounter last year in the semis of the 2018 Nitto ATP Finals, Zverev expects a tight affair ahead with one of the sport’s biggest names.

“I think it was very good tennis, but I know against Roger it’s going to be very, very difficult. He’s going to try to do different things, and it’s going to be a difficult match,” said Zverev.
