Miami Open: Brutal Day for the Hosts Except for Fritz

Taylor Fritz is among the highest-seeded players left in this year’s Miami Open. The world no. 4 advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Denis Shapovalov in the Round of 32, and he’s one of the favourites to win it all, according to the latest Miami Open 2025 odds.

His latest win has brought cheers to US fans because some of their fellow countrymen were not as fortunate. Reilly Opelka and Frances Tiafoe lost to Tomas Machac and Arthur Fils in the previous round. On the women’s side, Coco Gauff, Danielle Collins, and Amanda Anisimova are also eliminated from the Round of 16.

Meanwhile, Jack Draper’s Sunshine Double bid was unsuccessful after losing in the Round of 64. Besides Fritz, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic also advanced to the fourth round after taking care of business.

Fritz provides hope for the Americans

As mentioned, Taylor Fritz secured a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Denis Shapovalov to clinch his fourth-round berth in Miami. The American international almost slipped a 5-2 lead in the first set but regained control through his solid service to finish the match after roughly 86 minutes.

The match had a 10-minute delay when a courtside fan needed medical assistance, and Shapovalov built momentum after that by making it 5-5 in the opening set. However, in the 12th game, he surrendered his serve to love with consecutive double faults before Fritz fired a left-handed forehand en route to clinching his only set point. Fritz was ruthlessly efficient on serve throughout the second set, as he didn’t drop a point behind his first 17 deliveries to eventually notch the victory.

Since the Australian Open, Fritz has been dealing with an abdominal injury, which forced him to withdraw from the Mexican Open last March. But, since then, he has reached the Round of 16 in the American swing.

Fritz will face Adam Walton in the next round. Walton, who beat Coleman Wong 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-4 in the Round of 32, is the fourth lucky loser to reach the fourth round of the Miami Open. The 27-year-old aims to replicate his success in the 2022 Indian Wells Masters for his country.

Speaking of doing it for his country, Brandon Nakashima and Sebastian Korda aim to do the same. Nakashima is fresh from a three-set thriller against David Goffin, while Korda booted out Tsitsipas in two sets.

Zverev sets new Masters 1000 record

Alexander Zverev overcame a slow start at the Miami Open to break a new ATP Masters 1000 record
Alexander Zverev returns a shot against Jordan Thompson on Day 7 of the Miami Open at Hard Rock Stadium

Alexander Zverev shook off a slow start to stay alive in the Miami Open and set a new ATP Masters 1000 record. After falling to 1-4 in the opening set, Zverev grew into the match by winning eight of the next nine games and never looked back. He let out a primal scream when he shot a sublime drop volley in the 11th game, which summed up his emotions during the match. The German international’s second serve was key for him, as he dropped just three of the 13 second-serve points for a winning percentage of 77.

By recording his 81st Masters 1000 victory since 2020, Zverev broke his tie with Stefanos Tsitsipas for the most wins by any player in that period. Since 2020, the German international has won four titles and reached two further finals.

Zverev’s third-round win in Miami marks only the second time he has earned back-to-back tour-level victories since reaching his third major final in this season’s Australian Open. The 27-year-old last reached the Miami Open final in 2018, losing to John Isner. He will continue his campaign against Arthur Fils, who beat Frances Tiafoe 7-6(11), 5-7, 6-2.

Djokovic leapfrogs Big 3 rival

Djokovic is back in the Miami Open Round of 16 after getting bounced by Luca Nardi last year. The Serbian international registered a 6-1, 7-6(1) victory over Camilo Ugo Carabelli yesterday for his 411th win at Masters 1000 events, surpassing Rafael Nadal.

After a brisk start, Djokovic appeared to have taken complete control when he broke Carabelli’s serve in the third game of the second set. However, the Argentine international immediately reclaimed the break and held firm behind serve to force a tie-break.

Djokovic’s experience showed during the tie-break, and there was nothing Carabelli could do about it. The 37-year-old finished the match having won 80 per cent of points behind his first serve. He hasn’t dropped a set after two matches of his first Miami appearance since 2019.  His next opponent is world no. 16 Lorenzo Musetti. Musetti reached the Miami Open fourth round for the second straight year after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
