ATP Finals: Sinner Finishes the Season On Top of the World

Jannik Sinner will finish 2024 on top of the world after he won his maiden ATP Finals trophy in front of his home fans in Turin, Italy, on Monday.

The young Italian won the coveted prize by breezing past his competition, notching five consecutive victories without even dropping a single set.

Sinner’s final opponent, Taylor Fritz, did well for himself despite coming up short in the end. The 27-year-old American was one of the biggest movers in the ATP rankings because he achieved history in the season-ending tournament.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz expressed his excitement to compete in his final tournament of the year after suffering an earlier-than-expected exit in the ATP Finals, despite his high ATP Finals 2024 odds.

Just in case you missed it, don’t worry, as SBOTOP has you covered with the latest ATP Finals 2024 updates.

Sinner reflects after winning maiden ATP Finals trophy

Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the final for his eighth title to cap off a remarkable campaign that began with his first Grand Slam triumph at the Australian Open.

He followed that one up with his second Grand Slam triumph at the US Open after being embroiled in a doping controversy since he tested positive twice for traces of steroid clostebol.

While Sinner awaits the outcome of the case filed against him, the young Italian is looking ahead to 2025 with a view of taking his game to another level since he believes he is just getting started.

“Whatever we can catch, we take, and the rest we learn. I think that was the mentality we approached this whole year, trying to raise my level in specific moments, which I’ve done throughout this year,” said Sinner.

“I’m very happy about that because it’s a very nice way to finish off an incredible season. A lot of wins, a lot of titles,” he added.

Sinner became the first Italian to win the ATP Finals in its 55-year history after becoming the first from his country to top the ATP’s end-of-year rankings.

His Tour-leading 70th win of the season made him the first player since Ivan Lendl in 1986 to win the ATP Finals without dropping a single set.

Jannik Sinner still has one tournament to play before the end of the calendar year, as he will be at the forefront of Italy’s title defence in the upcoming Davis Cup.

Fritz reaches new career-high

Taylor Fritz has been on a steady rise in the past few years, and now it has culminated in a Top 4 finish to cap off the 2024 season after a superb showing in the ATP Finals.

The 27-year-old recorded two wins and one loss in the group stage before ruining Alexander Zverev’s hat-trick quest in the semi-finals. Fritz became the first American to reach the ATP Finals match since James Blake in 2006, but he had no answers against Sinner, with whom he had his only group stage defeat.

Despite the loss, Taylor Fritz can give himself a huge pat in the back for a job well done this year. Before the ATP Finals, Fritz reached his maiden major final at the US Open and won tour-level titles in Delray Beach and Eastbourne.

“Something I told my team in 2023 when I hit World No. 5 for a week right before I was defending the Indian Wells title, was ‘That’s crazy, I’m five the world, look at all these guys ranked behind me that are probably better than me’,” Fritz stated.

“Back then I was five, but I didn’t feel like I was five. Now I’m ranked where I’m at. I feel like I belong. It’s a different feeling. It’s been a great year. That gives me a lot of confidence to have that belief,” he added.

Alcaraz has his focus on the next tournament

One player who’s excited to play in the Davis Cup is Carlos Alcaraz, especially since he’s coming off a lacklustre run in the ATP Finals.

The young Spaniard wasn’t himself throughout the tournament because he didn’t get out of the group stage after notching only one win and two losses.

For Spain to triumph at the Davis Cup in Malaga, Carlos Alcaraz must regain his otherworldly form fast, and maybe being teammates with Rafael Nadal should boost his morale.

Regardless of what happens in Malaga, Alcaraz can say he still had a great 2024 season, as he won the French Open and Wimbledon. The 21-year-old will finish as the third seed in the end-of-year rankings behind Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner.
