1st Test: South Africa vs India
It’s not often we can truly say that, but there is no doubt we will be watching the very best when South Africa and India clash in their three-match January series.
The First Test at Newlands sets the scene on Friday when the world’s two top sides come face to face. And while online betting cricket fans know that Virat Kohli’s India leads the ICC rankings, it is the Proteas who start as favourites.
The betting odds reflect the home advantage, as the hosts are 1.68 to win while the draw at 3.25 and India at 3.90. The Indian batsmen will need to be on their game from the off as the South Africans will prepare green wickets to suit their excellent pace attack of Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander and
Kagiso Rabada. Morkel took five wickets to skittle Zimbabwe as the hosts warmed up with a convincing Christmas win. Their only concern is a hamstring strain suffered by wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock, but he should be fit to play.
India have won nine test series on the run to shoot to the top of the world rankings, with batsman Rohit Sharma in tremendous form. The visitors arrive in South Africa on the back of a whitewash T20 victory over Sri Lanka; Sharma equalling the world’s fastest century in 35 balls. Meanwhile, opener Shikhar Dhawan is hopeful of recovering from an ankle injury in time.
If he can, and India’s top order continues to perform to the highest standard, then Morne and Co have a real game on.
