Brave Windies can Close the Tour with a Nice Big Smile

5th ODI: England vs West Indies

The Windies head to Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl on Friday to take on England in the final ODI, with a chance to finish on a high after a difficult tour.

Had it not been for the rain leaving them just on the wrong side of a Duckworth-Lewis calculation, they’d be heading for Southampton still in the series at 1-2, and with a chance of upsetting the betting tips.

Of course, the betting odds on a 4-0 series win are in England’s favour, but sports betting fans will look to the explosive Chris Gayle and his pals to make a match of it. The big Jamaican’s all-action game has breathed life into the Windies after his absence, due to a dispute with the authorities, kept him out for two years.

It was Gayle’s opening partner Evin Lewis who starred in the fourth match at the Oval as the Windies reached a mammoth 356 to have a great chance of winning. The exciting left-hander struck his highest one-day score, a brilliant 176 in 130 balls.

But then as the rain came, Moeen Ali hit 48 off 25 balls to see England over the line on the Duckworth-Lewis calculation, which was really hard on the Windies. At 258 for 5, England were relying heavily on Ali and Jos Buttler to go big. Who’s to say they wouldn’t, but the Windies can take heart from their dominant batting display.

Led by Jason Holder, who scored a quick-fire 77 at the Oval, the tourists have a chance of salvaging a little something from this series. It won’t be easy: England’s team is full of attacking flair. A Jonny Bairstow ton in the first ODI and Moeen Ali’s incredible century in 53 balls in the third ODI put the Three Lions firmly in charge of the series.

But it’s game on at the Bowl and the Windies can still end the summer with a smile.
