50 and O: What a Big Night for Money Mayweather!

After all the trash talks, the promotional stunts and the media hype, it was Floyd Mayweather who delivered to his promise.

Sports betting pundits knew that the super welterweight fight was just a matter of time for Mayweather, and although Conor McGregor surprised live betting with his great start, the Irishman just doesn’t have enough boxing experience (and stamina) to defy betting odds.

Mayweather needed ten rounds to stop The Notorious, and the fighter known for his defensive acumen ended the bout with flair as he swarmed the exhausted McGregor with a barrage of combination punches which eventually forced Referee Robert Byrd to stop Round 10 with 1:55 left on the clock.

Sure enough, it wasn’t a typical Mayweather show as the 40-year-old struggled at the beginning, leading people to highlight his previous statement that he is no longer the fighter that he was two years ago.

McGregor took advantage of Mayweather’s obvious rustiness and controlled the first three rounds. The 29-year-old had his right punch and jabs clicking for him, and although he wasn’t hitting hard with his disciplined approach, he scored points to frustrate his American opponent.

However, it didn’t last long for the UFC champion with Mayweather finally finding his groove in the fourth round.

It took some time for Money to find the right angle for his punches, but once he had a great read of McGregor, he started connecting clean and hard punches to slow and wear down the fighting Irish.

McGregor, who is used to fighting in UFC’s shorter matches, was clearly tired midway through the 12-round fight, and Mayweather used this opportunity to finish off the big-mouthed MMA star.

Mayweather had McGregor leaning on ropes in Round 9, and smelling blood; he attacked relentlessly come the next round and let a bloodied McGregor eat shot after shot.

Post-match statistics showed that McGregor landed 111 of 430 punches while Mayweather had 170 out of 320 punches.

“I gave the fans what they wanted to see,” Mayweather said after the fight. “I told them that I owed them for the Pacquiao fight. I must come straight ahead and give them a show.”

The win improved Mayweather’s unblemished record to 50-0, allowing the largely controversial boxer to bid farewell to his career in a stunning and historic fashion.

For McGregor, he proved critics wrong with a classy fight and should have his head held high after the match.
