England vs Germany
You really need your star players when you’re facing the best team in the world, but that’s not how life is for England manager Gareth Southgate.
Online betting fans may see England’s upcoming friendly against Germany as a step too far for the Lions. Joachim Low’s World Champions have won their last five football games and are sitting at the top of FIFA’s rankings. Add to that the absence of Harry Kane and England are an outside chance at betting odds of 3.30 to win, with Germany fancied at 2.13 and the draw at 3.25.
It’s a sound football prediction, of course, that Germany should have the lion’s share of possession; but when England do get the ball, someone needs to step up into Kane’s shoes. England have won their last four games but remember, they crashed out of the Euros to Iceland and are missing Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Dele Alli, as well as captain Kane.
It’s a chance for new call-ups Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Joe Gomez, Tammy Abraham and Jack Cork to stake a claim if they get a chance, but the opposition couldn’t be tougher.
Low has a wealth of riches to call upon, with world stars Toni Kroos, Julian Draxler and City’s Leroy Sane a frightening prospect for any team to face. Add to that the impressive progress of players such as Joshua Kimmich and Sandro Wagner; the Germans are formidable as ever.
But England’s Eric Dier says the Lions are up for the fight: “I don’t think there is ever going to be a friendly between England and Germany so we are really looking forward to that.”
