Portugal vs Chile
Europe’s finest take on South America’s top dogs in the Confederations Cup semi-final on Wednesday, and both will be mightily keen to add to their trophy haul.
With the European Championships and Copa America titles, Portugal and Chile can claim to be at the peak of the two most powerful football continents on the planet. Portugal won the European Championships in 2016 when few betting tips took notice, while Chile upset the betting odds too by beating Argentina in last year’s Copa.
And this is going to be a great contest, with egos aplenty and betting websites unable to decide on a clear winner. The only previous meeting in 2011 ended in a 1-1 draw.
Fernando Santos’ Portugal have been the more impressive of the two so far, seeing off the hosts, Russia, before hammering New Zealand 4-0. Cristiano Ronaldo is not short of support up front with the exciting Silvas, Andre and Bernardo, terrorising defences and both finding the net.
Eduardo Vargas has been a lively threat up front for Chile, but Juan Antonio Pizzi’s team arrive on the back of two draws, against Germany and Australia. They have been widely tipped as finalists, relying on the steel, skill and leadership of Arturo Vidal in midfield. And Pizzi says his star striker, Alexis Sanchez, is focused on Chile winning this tournament rather than leaving Arsenal despite media reports to the contrary.
He needs to be right if Chile are to win the initiative in this battle.
