The taste of a big victory is sweeter at home!

Iceland 1-0 Croatia

Iceland finally got their revenge against Croatia in front of their home fans, and to make the victory even sweeter, they now share the top of Group I with the Croats.

It was indeed a memorable live betting affair at Laugardalsvollur as Iceland won it at the death of time, sparking delirious celebrations in the stands and sending their online betting supporters into a frenzy.

Betting odds back the far stronger Croatia side to win, but the absence of some national team regulars coupled with tired legs (and poor use of substitutions) saw them collapse defensively late in the game.

There were few opportunities for Iceland to score as they focused on stopping the Croatia attack. However, they managed to get the lead in the last minute through Hordur Magnusson who headed the ball home off a corner kick.

Iceland already looked happy with a draw, but that didn’t stop them from launching a final attack which resulted in a corner kick that paved the way for their victory – proving that they still have the knack for pulling an upset just like what they showed during the Euro 2016.

Croatia appeared to be the more dangerous team for the most part, having Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic threatening to score as early as eight minutes.

Ante Cacic’s outfit also had the best opportunity to break the deadlock in the 55th minute when Perisic crossed the ball to Nikola Kalinic, only for the Fiorentina striker to shot it wide of the post.

Iceland kept pressing the Croats, leaving them little room to play their style of football. And although the visitors dominated the possession, they weren’t able to take the lead.

It was just the second goal that Croatia conceded in the Europe World Cup Qualifiers, and the loss meant that they are now level on points (but still ahead on goal difference) with Iceland with 13 to lead the group.

For Iceland, this is their first win against Croatia in six meetings, so it will certainly give them some boost as they eye to get the sole control of the top spot with four games to play.
