Mexico 0-0 Jamaica
Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake, with a little help from his post, was the hero as the Reggae Boyz shut out Mexico in the Group C leaders’ race.
Defying betting odds as well as El Tri, Blake simply couldn’t be beaten on the night. And the betting websites’ favourites clearly aren’t going to have it all their own way in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, as Mexico’s biggest rivals, USA, struggled to beat tiny Martinique 3-2!
This was one of those football games that looked like a training ground attack versus defence; and try as they might, Mexico couldn’t get through the determined Jamaican rearguard at the Sports Authority Field in Denver.
El Tri dominated the ball and, for much of the game, Jamaica was content to let that happen. Normally a fast, physical and attacking side, Theo Whitmore’s boys showed they have a disciplined and well-organised edge to their game when they need it. The defence restricted Mexico to 14 attempts on goal, and Blake coped admirably.
But he needed help from his post half-way through the first half when a header from Erick Torres crashed the upright. As the match wore on, Torres cut a lone figure up front as Mexico lacked the invention to score.
The result means the two are tied on four points at the top of Group C. Mexico will hope to win it by beating struggling Curacao, while the Reggae Boyz face another tough test against El Salvador.
