Serie A: The Old Lady is on Crutches

countdown banner

After a strong start to their Serie A campaign, Juventus are slowly slipping down the league standings thanks to pedestrian Serie A 2024 results in the past few weeks.

Thanks to an underwhelming performance against a mid-table Genoa that ended in a 0-0 scoreless draw, Juventus are now with just six points in their last five top flight matches and have only claimed one victory in their last eight.

Because of this, the Old Lady is pushed down the table, slipping to the third seed, making room for AC Milan to grab the second spot. They are now three points clear of Allegri and his outfit.

Is it time to push the panic button in Turin? After 29 matches in the top flight, Juve are now trailing league leaders Inter by a hefty 17 points. And with a total of 59 points, they are now well within striking distance of Bologna and Roma, who are two of the hottest teams in the top flight as of late.

Juventus don’t have the luxury of taking a foot off the pedal every now and then like Inter, and with how they’ve been trending in the past few weeks, their Champions League aspirations might be put in danger as well.

Napoli end Inter’s winning streak

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Inter walk away from a match without three points, but lo and behold, after a lengthy streak of dominance in Serie A, I Nerrazzurri were pulled back to earth by the defending Italian League champions, Napoli, with a 1-1 draw at San Siro.

Inter had the lead right before halftime, thanks to Mattero Darmian’s efforts in minute 43. They proceeded to battle it out with Napoli all throughout the second half, and it looked like they were going to get a narrow win against the reigning Serie A champs. Or so they thought.

Juan Jesus successfully ended Inter’s winning streak in minute 81 with a ball that found its way perfectly within his reach, then proceeded to deliver a close-ranged header that slotted past the Napoli keeper, who was nowhere near the ball.

It looks like their loss to Atletico Madrid in their last 16 tie in the Champions League got in their heads, and it’s taking the SBOTOP Serie A 2024 odds favourites some time to recuperate.

Luckily for Inzaghi and his men, they still have a chokehold on the top flight with a commanding 14-point lead over the trailing AC Milan. This draw shouldn’t be a cause for concern, as I Nerrazzurri are still in a league of their own, and it would only be fair for them to have some tepid outings every now and then.

Maurizio Sarri resigns from Lazio

After four straight losses, Lazio head coach Maruizio Sarri decided to step down as the manager of the Roman outfit. Lazio are having a tepid season, sitting ninth in the league standings, nowhere near European contention, and are leagues away from Inter in the Serie A.

Their dreadful stretch of football started with their 2-1 defeat in Florence, then proceeded with a tough defeat against AC Milan in Rome. Sarri and his men had no time to recuperate as they needed to march to Bavaria and face the German league champions, Bayern Munich, for their last 16 tie in the Champions League.

In Munich, they suffered a humbling 0-3 loss, ending their Champions League dreams to boot. With heavy hearts, they played host to relegation candidates Udinese. The Eagles players and fans in attendance could finally take a breather, as the win against the struggling visitors was close to a sure thing.

But to their surprise, Udinese’s final third was deadly accurate that night, as Lorenzo Lucca and Oier Zarraga scored two rapid-fire goals to start the second half. The match ended with a 1-2 score line, with Lazio’s goal coming from a Lautaro Giannetti own goal.

The four straight defeats served as the punctuation mark for Sarri, as he announced his retirement after the humbling tie against Udinese. Meanwhile, his assistant, Giovanni Martusciello, is serving as the interim manager for the Eagles and has already recorded his first win as the man at the helm after their 2-3 tie against Frosinone.

Martusciello will only have a short stint as the head coach, though, as he will leave the club upon Igor Tudor’s arrival. Lazio have announced that Igor Tudor and the club have agreed on a contract that will have the Croatian tactician as the head coach until the summer of next year. Tudor is expected to be with Lazio sometime next week.
