Serie A: Lazio and Bologna are Both Gaining Steam

countdown banner

Lazio vs Bologna

Bologna are striving for the Champions League, but so are Lazio, and these two teams are set to go head-to-head at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday for one of the much-awaited games on matchday 25 of the 2023-24 Serie A campaign.

Right now, Bologna have the edge because they’re in fifth place with 42 points, level with fourth-seeded Atalanta. Thiago Motta’s side is undefeated in their last four league games, highlighted by a three-game winning streak (D1).

However, while Lazio are behind them in seventh place with 37 points, Maurizio Sarri’s men have a game in hand. If they win this game and beat Torino next Friday, they might find themselves back in the top four at the end of the month.

Without further ado, here is the preview of this matchup, courtesy of SBOTOP.

Talking Points

Immobile achieves huge milestone at Lazio

Lazio can only go as far as Ciro Immobile takes them, and the good news is that he is showing no signs of slowing down, even as he turns 34 next week.

After losing 3-1 against Atalanta a fortnight ago, Lazio bounced back with a 3-1 win over Cagliari, and Immobile is on the scoresheet once again, alongside Felipe Anderson.

With his goal in the second half, Immobile has become the third-fastest player in Serie A history to reach 200 career league goals, doing so in 341 matches and only slower than Giuseppe Meazza (296 games) and Gunnar Nordahl (238).

In fact, Ciro Immobile reached the 200-goal threshold quicker than the likes of Antonio Di Natale, Francesco Totti, and Roberto Baggio, which is amazing, to say the least.

And his goalscoring exploits continued in their 1-0 upset against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, as he scored the penalty kick won by Gustav Isaksen, which saw Dayot Upamecano sent off for the foul.

As it stands, Immobile now has 10 goals in all competitions to lead I Biancocelesti. He, Felipe Anderson, and Gustav Isaksen should continue to lead the line for Lazio.

Orsolini on fire for Bologna

Bologna have an in-form striker of their own in Riccardo Orsolini, the team’s leading scorer with nine goals so far this season, including five goals in their last five league games.

Against Fiorentina last night, the 27-year-old centre-forward converted from 12 yards using his left foot after he gathered a Lewis Ferguson cross to give I Rossoblu the lead for good. Orsolini should’ve had a brace after that if it weren’t for Stefan Posch being offside.

This season, Orsolini has formed a potent partnership with Joshua Zirkzee, Lewis Ferguson, and Alexis Saelemaekers up front, with the help of Thiago Motta’s fluid tactics.

Zirkzee has found a home in Bologna after his four-year stint with Bayern Munich. The 22-year-old winger is the second-leading scorer for Bologna with eight goals, while Ferguson and Saelemaekers have combined for six goals and four assists thus far.

History

Bologna eked out a 1-0 win over Lazio in their reverse fixture at the Renato Dall’Ara last November, as Lewis Ferguson scored the only goal of the match right after halftime. If they win again this weekend, it’ll be the first time since 1996-97 that they score a league double against Lazio.

I Rossoblu have also kept a clean sheet in four of their last six Serie A matches against I Biancocelesti, which is as many as in their previous 31 encounters. However, the last time they managed to do so on the road against Lazio was back in November 2009, when they held them to a goalless draw.

Bologna have scored the most goals in their Serie A history against Lazio (188). Meanwhile, Lazio have scored the second-most goals in their Serie A history against Bologna (196).

Betting Tip

According to the Serie A 2024 odds, we are in for another tight contest between I Biancocelesti and I Rossoblu this weekend. Lazio were given the slight edge at 2.29, while Bologna are at 3.11 odds, and a draw is at 2.90 in the 1X2 market.

With their strikers currently in fine form, we feel that there will be more Serie A 2024 highlights this time, hence our recommended bet above. And if you’re swinging for the fences, then take a look at Over 2.25 at 2.21 and Total Goals 4-6 at 4.56, given their higher payouts.

If you don’t agree, then that’s completely fine, since Total Goal 0-1 is on offer at 2.47, while a Correct Score of 1-0 for Lazio and Bologna is pegged at 5.60 and 7.40, respectively.
