Serie A: I Nerazzurri are Pulling Away in Scudetto Race

countdown banner

Like every other outfit in the Serie A, the still perplexed Roma were unsuccessful in interrupting Inter Milan’s title run. But to be fair, Daniele De Rossi’s Roma were scorching coming into their clash against Inter. I Giallorossi were riding a three-game winning streak when they played host to the visiting Nerazzurri, producing some of their best Serie A 2024 results with competitive wins over Salernitana, Verona, and a dominant 4-0 win over Cagliari.

But even with all the momentum and an in-form Dybala, it wasn’t enough to put even the slightest of threats to the Nerazzurri’s claim on the Scudetto.

Simone Inzaghi boasted their potent offence in front of the dazzled Roma fans and proceeded to score four goals (including an Angelino own goal). Inter Milan only struck at the goal 10 times, but that’s all they need to finish the game with a score line of 2-4.

With this win, Simone Inzaghi’s Nerazzurri increased their goal tally to 55, the most in the entire Italian top flight thus far in the season. But most importantly, they increased their lead in the title race and are now seven points clear of second-placed Juventus after 23 top-flight matches with a game in hand to boot.

Inter will have another opportunity to grab three points as they host the lowly Salernitana next week before they battle the Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

AC Milan started their busy week on a good note

The Rossoneri are in the middle of their three-game week (two in Serie A and one in Europe), so it’s vital that they start the week with a win to get a much-needed morale boost to face their stacked slate.

Stefano Pioli's AC MIlan have started their busy week with a Serie A win against Napoli

Luckily for them, the frailties of their defence held up against Napoli at San Siro. Milan held Napoli to a 1-0 clean sheet defeat as the Rossoneri defencive line were able to brace 12 attempts from Napoli’s final third.

Even though Milan were only able to score one goal, this is exactly the type of win they needed. Stefano Pioli’s defence was struggling to get sturdy results in the second half of the campaign as they’ve conceded way too many goals since January, so a clean sheet victory against one of the most potent offences in Italy comes as a breath of fresh air for the Rossoneri

One down, two to go! Pioli and his men will now host the French outfit Rennes for the first time in the Europa League, and then they will abruptly follow it with a clash against Monza at Stadio Brianteo for a Serie A bout.

Bologna were perfect against Lecce

Bologna were the SBOTOP Serie A 2024 odds favourites to win against Lecce at Renato Dall’Ara, and they sure showed why.

Riccardo Orsolini led the way for I Rossoblù by scoring two goals, which were more than enough to secure the win against the visiting Lecce.

Sam Beukema and Jens Odgaard also scored one goal apiece to finish the match with a 4-0 score line. Despite taking 14 attempts at the goal, Lecce were unable to get a single goal back and were forced to leave Renato Dall’Ara without a point to their name.

Bologna are on pace to have their best finishes in recent years, already garnering 39 points after 23 games. With their win over Lecce, they leapfrogged up the league standings and found themselves in a prime spot for European competition if they managed to maintain their 5th-seed status until the end of the season.

But their place in the upper echelon of Serie A will immediately face a test as they play host to a threatening Fiorentina squad later this week.

Goals galore in Florence

Speaking of Fiorentina, they finally managed to get out of their slump after defeating Frosinone in an emphatic fashion.

Coming into Matchday 24, Fiorentina have been without a win since December 30, 2023. That’s a five-game stretch with just one point in their back pockets, thanks to their 2-2 draw against Udinese.

Vincenzo Italiano and his men sure do know how to seek vengeance, as they played what may be their best game in the entire season thus far. Five La viola players scored one goal apiece, while Frosinone’s Luca Mazzitelli was able to get one back, ending the game on a 5-1 score line.

Realistically speaking, Fiorentina are already out of the Scudetto race this season, but European qualification is still well within reach. They’re just two points behind 5th-seeded Bologna, and they could easily find themselves rubbing elbows with Serie A’s finest if they continue to display the type of dominance they showed against Frosinone moving forward.
