It has been an electrifying start to the Serie A season as the top teams during the 2022–23 season have fallen down on the league standings, while Inter and Juventus are posting strong Serie A 2023 results and are poised to run away as the top-two teams in the Italian top flight.
At this point in the season, the Serie A landscape has already started to take shape. So, join SBOTOP in dissecting the winners, losers, and special awardees this early on in the season.
Winners
Inter Milan
Simone Inzaghi’s side has emerged as the top club in Italy after 15 games in this year’s campaign. Inter continued their success last season, where they finished as the third-best club in Italy, just two points behind Lazio in second place.
With a record of 12 wins, two draws, and just one loss, Internazionale have a total of 38 points while also boasting the best offence in the league, scoring a league-best 37 goals. Their potent offence is matched with a defence that’s a bulwark against any attacking threat that comes its way, as Inter also claim the best defence in Serie A, having the least amount of conceded goals with seven.
Inter’s Lautaro Martinez being the top scorer in the league and Marcus Thuram dishing out the most assists bolster their claim as the Serie A 2023 odds favourites to win the Serie A title this season.
Juventus
The Old Lady rejoice once again, as they’re currently just an earshot away from the league leaders, Inter Milan. After a mediocre campaign last season, Juventus have managed to turn things around and go back to their winning ways by tallying 36 points after 15 matchdays in the Italian top flight.
Not to jump the gun, but it’s looking like this season will be a two-horse race between Inter Milan and Juventus to become the Serie A 2023–24 champions. Third-placed AC Milan have made it harder for themselves to catch up to Juventus after suffering a crushing defeat against Atalanta, keeping their league points stagnant at 29.
Max Allegri’s 3-5-2 formation has been paying dividends for his squad, and the chemistry between Chiesa and Vlahovic is shaping up to be one of the best duos not just in Italy but in the whole of Europe.
Losers
Napoli
It seems like Napoli ran out of steam after winning the Serie A title in a convincing manner last season, as they start this year’s campaign with an underwhelming stretch of football.
After dominating the league last season, they find themselves back to earth as the sixth seed in the league standings. It’s been a tale of inconsistencies for the Blues in the first 15 games of the season, and they can’t seem to produce a convincing stretch of games to boost them back to title contention.
It has been such a rough start for Napoli that they decided to part ways with head coach Rudi Garcia and bring in Walter Mazzarri to be the man at the helm. Even though the Blues are struggling to successfully defend their Serie A title, it must be a comforting thought for Napoli fans that the club is taking a proactive approach to getting their beloved team back in the title race.
Lazio
To say that Lazio has been having an underwhelming season is an understatement. Maurizio Sarri’s Eagles soared high last season and finished as the second-best club in the entire Italian top flight, but everything took a 180-degree turn in the early stages of the 2023–24 season.
The Eagles have been a headscratcher this season, as they struggle mightily in the top flight, having just a total of 21 points after 15 games. They find themselves in the 10th spot and are susceptible to sliding down the league table even more, as teams like Torino and Frosinone are well within striking distance and are more than capable of overtaking Sarri’s squad.
Most Valuable Player
Internazionale’s Lautaro Martinez is the MVP for this SBOTOP roundup simply because the 26-year-old Argentine has been playing out of this world this season. Inter Milan’s captain has been the skipper and the tip of the spear for Simone Inzagh. Martinez is the centre point of Inter’s system, and it’s paying dividends as the Argentine striker leads the entire Italian top flight with 13 goals.
The World Cup winner chiefs his team night in and night out with his world-class leadership and poise. And it helps that his teammates, Thuram in particular, have great chemistry together—telepathic, almost.
Lautaro is the best player on the best team in Serie A, and for that reason alone, he rightfully deserves the MVP award in this roundup.
