Serie A: Can Atalanta Shock the World?

The 2024-25 Serie A title race is heating up between Inter Milan, Napoli, and Atalanta. Inter Milan are on top of the Italian top-flight standings with 64 points. Napoli are the second seed with 61 points, and Atalanta are the third seed with 58 points. Meanwhile, Bologna are in fourth place with 53 points but look unlikely to contend for the Scudetto.

Since the 2016-17 season, Atalanta established themselves as a sleeping giant in Italy, continuously punching above their weight despite their meagre budget compared to the other contenders. Finishing in the Top 4 is no longer enough because they believe they have the tools to win the whole thing.

Inter Milan and Napoli have won the last two Scudettos, and Atalanta aim to gatecrash this time. The SBOTOP Serie A 2025 odds are stacked against Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, but that won’t deter La Dea from believing in themselves and going all-out.

Atalanta have been on a steady rise

Atalanta had their fans believe they could win trophies since last season. After several appearances in Europe and deep cup runs in recent years, La Dea finally broke their trophy drought when they won their first Europa League against a dominant Bayer Leverkusen side. Ademola Lookman deservedly won the Man of the Match honours for recording a rare hat-trick in the final game.

But, this season, Atalanta will miss out on several silverware chances. They were eliminated in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-finals by Inter Milan last January, lost to Bologna in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals last February, and got booted out by Club Brugge in the Champions League knockout play-off round.

Because they’re no longer in those competitions, La Dea can devote all their energy to winning the Serie A championship. However, their Serie A 2025 results must improve since they don’t control their fate with nine matchdays left in the campaign.

Before the March international break, La Dea lost 2-0 to Inter Milan, conceding goals from Carlos Augusto and Lautaro Martinez in the second half. Both sides lost key men, as Ederson and Alessandro Bastoni were sent off late. However, this was their first league loss since a 3-2 result against Napoli last January.

Who are standing out for Atalanta?

Gian Piero Gasperini has received plaudits for turning Atalanta into a goalscoring machine despite not having any big-name players. La Dea boast the second-most potent offence in Serie A with 63 league goals (only two goals behind Inter Milan) while conceding 28 goals for a healthy goal difference of +35.

Mateo Retegui is spearheading Atalanta to win the Serie A championship title this 2024-25 season

Mateo Retegui is having a remarkable season in the final third, leading La Dea with 22 league goals and four assists. The 25-year-old forward is the frontrunner for this year’s Capocannoniere award, and it’s not even close since he has a seven-goal lead over Fiorentina’s Moise Kean, who’s second behind Retegui.

Atalanta hope that Retegui will stay healthy for the rest of the 2024-25 campaign, as he has been bothered by lower leg injuries. The former Genoa man hurt his thigh while on international duty for Italy, causing fans to be nervous about his fitness.

Ademola Lookman is also doing well for Atalanta, notching 13 league goals and five assists. Charles De Ketelaere has five league goals and five assists and has done a superb job deputising for Retegui when he was injured. Raoul Bellanova is Atalanta’s top playmaker with six assists. Marten de Roon, Davide Zappacosta, and Ederson have 11 league goals and six assists combined.

Sead Kolasinac, Isak Hien, and Berat Djimsiti have formed a solid back three for Atalanta, and Marco Carnesecchi has seized the first-choice goalie spot.

What lies ahead for Atalanta

As mentioned, Atalanta don’t control their fate because they need Inter Milan and Napoli to slip up to win the Scudetto. However, it helps Gian Piero Gasperini’s men that they’re entering the lighter part of their schedule. They no longer must face Inter Milan or Napoli in their last nine league games.

La Dea will resume their campaign with games against Fiorentina, Lazio, Bologna, and AC Milan before facing relegation-threatened sides like Lecce and Monza. They will round out their schedule with matches against AS Roma, Genoa, and Parma.

On the other hand, Inter Milan have a tough stretch of matches because they’re also deep into the Champions League, already into the quarter-finals. Napoli, like Atalanta, no longer have European and cup games.

The stars must align for Atalanta to win their first Serie A title. It may not happen this year, but their fans can sleep well knowing their team is on the right track.
