The new season of Serie A is coming into view, and it started to look real after the full set of fixtures was announced on Friday 24th June.
The campaign is starting early and ending late, in June 2023, as it will be interrupted for a whole month to make way for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar. And there’s a tasty start for 2022 Scudetto winners AC Milan as they host Udinese on the opening day on 14th August.
Fans won’t have to wait long for the Milan Derby which is the match of Round Five on September 4th and then, two weeks later on September 18th Napoli are the visitors to the San Siro to face the champions. And it doesn’t get any easier for Stefano Pioli’s team when Juventus head to Milan for the first match in October.
They started the 2021/22 campaign in blistering form and if I Rossoneri are top of the league after nine games this time around…they might fancy their chances of back-to-back Scudetto’s. The early Serie A 2022 betting odds are backing a three-way race between the two Milan clubs and Juventus, and in a league which has been the tightest in Europe over the past two campaigns, we can expect plenty of twists, turns and drama.
Keep watching out for all the latest Serie A 2022 news, highlights and results here at SBOTOP as the action begins.
Big Matches in August
Atalanta vs AC Milan (21st)
Milan will hope to make it to the second game unscathed and with three points in the bag after hosting Udinese who finished 12th last season. Anything other than a home win will put I Rossoneri under some serious early pressure as they visit Bergamo to take on Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta.
La Dea is a free scoring team but they underperformed last term, finishing eighth and outside the European places. Colombian strike duo Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata are both 31 years of age and so have a couple more campaigns at the very highest level, and attacking midfielder Mario Pasalic had an impressive campaign last year.
This is a real test for the champions.
Juventus vs Roma (28th)
The Old Lady welcomes Jose Mourinho’s Roma to Turin on the third round of the new campaign; and the former Manchester United boss is likely to come face to face with one of his former Old Trafford players if, as expected, Paul Pogba completes his return to Juventus. The French midfielder had his best years with I Bianconeri but has left the Red Devils after an underwhelming six years, including a stint under Mourinho. The head coach and his most troublesome player had a rather public spat which ultimately led to the boss leaving. Though many United fans may now wish it had been the player to exit the club.
Pogba is an enigma and can be unplayable on his day; and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get back to his best in a place which brings happier memories, though the cunning Mourinho will do all he can to wreck the Old Lady’s day.
Lazio vs Inter Milan (28th)
Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Milan finished second last season and he’ll be determined to go one step further in his second campaign, having inherited the 2021 Scudetto winners from Antonio Conte. On 28th August he comes up against the team he successfully managed for five campaigns, until his switch to Milan, and he’ll meet his former striker and four times Capocannoniere winner Ciro Immobile.
Inter will hope to have the deal to bring Romelu Lukaku back finalised soon and the Belgian striker will link up again with Lautaro Martinez.
Hot reception for the New Boys
Cremonese, Lecce and Monza take their places in the top flight to replace the relegated trio of Cagliari, Genoa and Venezia and they each have a mouth-watering fixture to look forward to.
After two seasons in Serie B Lecce have bounced back as champions, and they have a peach of an opener when they welcome Inter Milan to the Stadio Via del Mare. Massimilano Alvini will be taking his first game in charge of Cremonese after Fabio Pecchia resigned, despite leading them to second place. And he takes the new boys to Florence to face Fiorentina who finished seventh last term.
Monza made it to the top flight for the first time in their history after finishing fourth and winning the play-offs, and they have been rewarded with a home fixture against Torino.
