Serie A: Lazio Go Top as Derby d’Italia Postponed

There’s a new leader in the Serie A title race. Lazio have now claimed top spot from Juventus after a comfortable 2-0 win over Bologna on the weekend.

Lazio’s match was one of just four that took place around Serie A this weekend as another wave of games were postponed due to the spread of the coronavirus in Italy. That included the much-anticipated Derby d’Italia between Juve and Inter.

But luckily for SBOBET Serie A fans, Atalanta and Roma more than made up for the lack of games with a barrage of Serie A 2020 highlights in their away wins.

Lazio take the lead after 2-0 home win over Bologna

For the first time since the 2010-11 season, Lazio are at the top of the Serie A standings after a 2-0 win over Bologna. Luis Alberto and Joaquin Correa struck in the space of three minutes for the Biancoceleste, who are now two points above Juventus in the table.

Meanwhile, the visitors had two goals rightly ruled out by the video assistant referee due to handball and offside.

Although Juventus still have a game in hand after their match against Inter was postponed, Lazio have shown that they are legitimate championship contenders. They have not lost in the league since August and overtook Inter as top challengers to Juve after a 2-1 win at the Stadio Olimpico.

Ciro Immobile didn’t score, but he continues to lead the Serie A goalscoring charts with 27 goals, six ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. Meanwhile, Luis Alberto added to his league-leading tally of 12 assists by setting up Correa’s goal.

With their win, Lazio improved their brilliant home record this season to 11 wins, three draws, and no defeats. However, the Serie A 2020 odds for their next match will have them as underdogs as they take on a dangerous Atalanta side away from home.

Derby d’Italia postponed due to coronavirus

The much-hyped matchup between Juventus and Inter Milan will have to wait as the Derby d’Italia was postponed due to concerns about the coronavirus.

The match, as well as the four others that were postponed, has been rescheduled for May 13th, the third to last match of the season for both clubs.

Inter, who are now eight points behind Lazio, also had their home game against Sampdoria postponed last week so they have two games in hand over the leaders. They played their Europa League round of 32 second leg against Ludogorets, which they won 2-1, behind closed doors.

The initial plan was for the Derby d’Italia to go through behind closed doors as well, but the Italian authorities opted to proceed with added caution amid the growing coronavirus crisis.

Due to the postponement, Inter will have over a week to prepare for their next match, which will come against Napoli. The Neapolitans have picked up their form of late with three league wins in a row and five in their last six. That includes a huge victory over Juventus at home.

Atalanta, Roma rack up the goals in away wins

While Lazio, Juventus, and Inter battle it out for the title, Atalanta and Roma are locked in a fight for the fourth and final Champions League place.

Atalanta got the upper hand in that battle by beating Roma 2-1 a couple of weeks ago. And after getting the week off last week due to a coronavirus postponement, they followed that up with a massive 7-2 win away at Lecce.

The visitors were two goals up inside 25 minutes, but Lecce fought back to level it up before half-time. Atalanta answered with five goals in the second half, though, as they scored seven goals for the second time in their last five league matches and the third time overall this season.

Duvan Zapata starred with a hat-trick. Two of his goals were set up by leading scorer Josip Ilicic, who also picked up his 15th league goal of the season.

Meanwhile, Roma kept pace with Atalanta after a thrilling 4-3 away win over Cagliari. The hosts took the lead on 28 minutes, but Roma equalised just a minute later through Nikola Kalinic. The Croatian then gave the visitors the lead just before half-time.

Justin Kluivert and Henrikh Mkhitaryan also struck in the second half to secure the win. Mkhitaryan has been in fine form of late, with three goals and three assists in six games since returning from a thigh injury.

With Atalanta set for a tough matchup against leaders Lazio next weekend, Roma will look to make up more ground as they host relegation-threatened Sampdoria.
