It’s been a strange few weeks in La Liga. First, Barcelona takes over at the top after Los Blancos stutter, then Barca makes the most amazing Champions League comeback only to slip on the first available banana skin back home!
Betting websites have responded by re-installing Real Madrid as clear favourites to win the title. But for us sports betting fans, there are tussles right down the league to enjoy this weekend, from European qualification to desperate attempts to avoid the drop.
WEEK 28 SATURDAY:
Las Palmas vs Villarreal
We love starting the weekend in Gran Canaria, and so have Las Palmas for much of the season, impressive at home but patchy of late. The Yellow Submarine is four points behind fourth place and four clear of seventh, and with three wins on the bounce, Fran Escriba’s boys will fancy this. They are at 2.69 to win with Las Palmas at 2.60. What a great opener!
Eibar vs Espanyol
Eighth plays ninth and Eibar have fallen off the pace, nine points off a European slot after drawing with bottom club Osasuna. Espanyol can’t catch the hosts with a win but will be in high spirits having won a seven-goal thriller last week against Las Palmas.
Athletic Club vs Real Madrid
I bet Zinedine Zidane couldn’t believe his luck when Barca spectacularly fluffed their lines last week and Sergio Ramos came up with another late winner for Los Blancos. Well, that’s what champions are made of. This is another test, though, against a Bilbao side pushing hard for a Europa League slot and just four points from sixth. The draw is at 3.85.
WEEK 28 SUNDAY:
Deportivo Alaves vs Real Sociedad
Real Sociedad hold that sought-after sixth place but are struggling for consistency… winning, losing and drawing one in their last three games. Alaves match that but, already safe, their focus will be on their historic Copa del Rey final appearance.
Real Betis vs Osasuna
Fourteenth plays rock bottom; and while grabbing a draw against Eibar was a great achievement for Osasuna, it only increased their season’s tally to 11 points. Sergio Leon has been a bright star with his seven goals, and pride will push Osasuna on to the end.
Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla
This is the match of the weekend, where inform Atletico can climb to within two points of third-placed Sevilla with a win. Jorge Sampaoli’s team was eyeing top spot until recently when the pressure seems to have had an effect. Two draws and a Champions League exit for the visitors make Atletico favourites for this one at 1.68.
Leganes vs Malaga
In another huge game, 17th-placed Leganes can take a giant step to a potentially brilliant survival campaign with a win over Malaga. The minnows could leapfrog the visitors with a win, which is well on the cards as Malaga have lost the last four.
WEEK 28 MONDAY:
Barcelona vs Valencia
The Spanish national press were quite gentle with Barca, exclaiming ‘they’re human’ after losing to Deportivo. I bet their fans could think of another word! Another such slip up against Valencia is unthinkable. Three wins in the last six have hauled the visitors away from an unseemly relegation struggle.
Deportivo La Coruna vs Celta Vigo
Deportivo are upwardly mobile with two wins and two draws, while the visitors have had two draws followed by two defeats. The home side can pull well clear of trouble if they can build on the momentum of last week’s amazing win against Barca.
Sporting Gijon vs Granada
Seven and six points behind Leganes respectively, these two both know a draw is no good. A win, meanwhile, will either make ground on Leganes or Malaga or both. Granada arrive with back-to-back defeats but Sporting haven’t won in five. Cometh the hour, cometh the men!
