Wales vs Republic of Ireland
The Cardiff City Stadium will be bouncing on Monday when Wales take on Ireland, the prize, almost certainly, a play-off place for the World Cup.
Football games of this magnitude don’t come around that often. Victory for either team will secure at least second place in Group D, and if Serbia slip up in Georgia, then top spot might even be up for grabs. It’s such a tight game to call, with the hosts slight favourites at betting odds of 2.02 with a -0.25 goal handicap and Ireland at 1.90 with that start. Both teams will go for the win, and you can get odds of 1.92 on Over 2.00 goals.
There’s plenty at stake and no little animosity between the two sides so it could be a feisty battle. It won’t have gone unmentioned in the Ireland camp that Wales’ Neil Taylor put Ireland skipper Seamus Coleman out of action with a horror tackle in the return fixture back in March. Taylor received his marching orders but Coleman is still sidelined. Ireland will not want that tackle to determine their, or indeed Wales’ fate.
Ireland coach Martin O’Neill said: “We’ve got a world-class player missing in Seamus Coleman. In my mind, he’s as big a loss to us as Gareth Bale is to Wales.” But the boss is ready to rally his troops: “Any team who can finish ahead of Serbia will win the group so we’re in there fighting, we’ve got a chance so let’s go for it.”
O’Neill has the suspended attacking pair Robbie Brady and James McClean available again after Daryl Murphy, who scored twice against Moldova, and Callum O’Dowda deputized well.
The Irish need a win, whereas a draw should be enough for Wales. This is not a game to miss!
