The relegation battle in the Premier League is as tight as the title race up top. While Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool are racing to clinch the Premier League title, clubs like Nottingham Forest, Luton Town, Burnley, and Sheffield United are clawing their way to stay in the top flight for the 2025 season.
The Blades are the first outfit to confirm their relegation status. The question now is: who will join the Blades in the drop zone?

Nottingham Forest
The Tricky Trees are treading above the bottom three, but they’re not out of relegation contention just yet. Forest only boast a one-point advantage over 18th-placed Luton Town thanks to their 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton two weeks ago.
The rest of their schedule is a bit peculiar, as they’ll face two fellow relegation candidates, Sheffield United and Burnley, to end their campaign, giving them the best chances to string up respectable Premier League 2024 results to end their season and stay in the top flight for the next campaign.
Forest should be further up the standings, but their breach of the league’s profit and sustainability rules handed them a four-point penalty last month. Everton were also guilty of breaching the PSR, but their stellar run as of late earned them 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
The Trees immediately felt the sanction and dropped down to the relegation zone, but their win over Fulham and their draw with Wolverhampton saw them out of the bottom three, just by a hair.
Luton Town
It’s not looking too good for Luton Town, as they failed to garner a single point in the past three Premier League matchweeks. They’ve garnered just three points in their last five, which is simply not enough to get them out of relegation contention. They actually just missed a chance to climb out of the relegation zone when they lost 2-1 against Wolverhampton on Saturday.
It doesn’t help that they have a relatively tough slate to end their season, facing the likes of Everton, West Ham United, and Fulham. Luckily, they need just two points to overtake Nottingham Forest for the 17th spot in the league standings.
Aside from their tepid defence to blame, the Hatters’ injury plague also bears a great part in their poor standing this season. Despite this, Luton Town have one of the best creators in the Premier League in Alfie Doughty, who boasts seven assists in the season. Expect the hatters to lean on their playmaking defender in hopes of staying in the top flight next season.
Burnley
Despite their current standing, Kompany’s Clarets have been posting decent Premier League results in the past few weeks, losing just one in their last five and staying unbeaten in their last three to boot.
They were faced with arguably the most crucial match of their season in terms of climbing out of the relegation zone when they marched to Old Trafford and braved the intimidating Red Devils in front of a sea of roaring United fans.
To be quite honest, the Clarets looked promising and kept the game levelled up until late in the second half, despite the offensive barrage Manchester United attempted on Burnley’s first third.
Ten Hag’s hefty signing, Antony, broke the ice and scored the opener in minute 79. By then, the Red Devils looked like they were poised to garner all three points, but Burnley, despite being the Premier League 2024 odds underdogs, found a way to level the match.
Courtesy of Zeki Amdouni’s attempt from the penalty spot, the Clarets levelled and ended the match with a 1-1 score line, garnering the much-needed point to add to their tally.
Kompany’s Clarets won the Championship last season, but they would surely rather stay in the top flight next season than go back to the Championship.
Sheffield United
Winning just three Premier League Matches since their promotion, Sheffield United have officially confirmed their one-and-done status in the top flight.
Unfortunately, the Blades are too deep in the drop zone to stay in the top flight next season. With just 16 points in their campaign thus far, Sheffield United need 10 points just to level with Nottingham Forest in the 17th spot.
With just three games remaining on their slate, the Blades can’t emerge out of the relegation zone even if they win all of the remaining matches on their schedule.
The Blades fared well in the Championship last term, finishing in second place with just Burnley ahead of them last season.
It’s established that they are a formidable Championship outfit, so a return to the Premier League in 2026 shouldn’t be that lofty of an ask for Sheffield United.
