Premier League: West Ham United Looking to Surprise Chelsea at Home

countdown banner

West Ham United vs Chelsea

A busy schedule awaits both West Ham United and Chelsea as they have two Premier League fixtures in a span of four days – including this one where they’ll meet anew at the London Stadium.

West Ham United are set to host Brighton tomorrow while league leaders Chelsea take their title charge on the road starting against Watford on the same day.

The fourth-placed West Ham United currently have 23 points as of this writing. And although there’s a big disparity between them and Chelsea – who are on top with 30 points – David Moyes’ men are determined to maintain their spot in the top four by gaining a good result here.

The SBOTOP pre-match betting odds are pessimistic on the Hammers’ chances since the Blues have been the better team historically, but the hosts aren’t about to back down.

David Moyes’ side will look to end their two-game losing streak, and what better way to do so than against a top side in Chelsea.

Talking Points

Michail Antonio needs his shooting boots back for West Ham

West Ham’s Michail Antonio and other key players are eager to pick up more Premier League points against Chelsea
West Ham’s Michail Antonio stands on the pitch during their match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium

Michail Antonio has yet to regain his footing following a blistering start to this campaign, and David Moyes is calling for a better performance from his talisman.

The Jamaican striker remains their leading scorer with seven goals and four assists thus far. However, he has scored just one goal in his last eight matches for the Hammers.

Since their stunning upset over Liverpool earlier this November, West Ham suffered losses to Manchester City and Wolves, and they’re in danger of falling out of the top four is this keeps up.

Fifth-placed Arsenal are breathing down their necks since they’re level at 23 points each and they have a winnable game against Manchester United given their superb form.

With West Ham United not having much viable attacking threats besides Michail Antonio, Said Benrahma, and Pablo Fornals, they are reportedly keen on adding offencive firepower in the upcoming January transfer window.

Injury worries for Chelsea

Given their grueling schedule, Chelsea are dealt with injury problems although it hasn’t affected their Premier League 2021 results.

Chelsea have nine victories under their belt and they certainly are title favourites. However, a slip-up here or there can jeopardise their campaign.

Thomas Tuchel had to make use of his full squad following the injuries of Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Ben Chilwell, and Romelu Lukaku. Meanwhile, there are doubts surrounding the fitness of Reece James, Timo Werner, and Jorginho ahead of tomorrow’s fixture vs. Watford.

Lukaku came on as a late substitute against Manchester United last Sunday which is good news for the Blues, and it remains to be seen on whether he’ll take back his main centre-forward role.

Versatility among his players has been the key to success for Thomas Tuchel especially upon learning that their defencive players are bringing in the goals.

Wing-back Reece James leads the way with five goals and five assists while centre-backs Trevoh Chalobah and Antonio Rudiger have combined for five goals and one assist.

History

West Ham United would certainly want to improve their overall record against Chelsea in their head-to-heads.

In their 42 games together prior to this weekend, Chelsea have had West Ham’s number since they’ve won 24 times while the other 18 games are split evenly to nine draws and nine losses.

These two sides previously met in April where Chelsea eked out a 1-0 win, courtesy of Timo Werner’s goal right before the half-time break. To make matters worse, West Ham were reduced to 10 men when Fabian Balbuena was sent off late.

That defeat was a big blow to West Ham’s Champions League aspirations at the time, and eventually they finished the 2020/21 season at sixth place while Chelsea sealed the final top four spot.

Betting Tip

??
West Ham United vs ChelseaChelsea Asian Handicap -0.75 @ 2.01
December 04, 20:30 PM (GMT+8)

Chelsea are installed as the favourites to win in this contest, as per the latest Premier League 2021 odds. The Blues are priced at 1.75 to win, while West Ham United are pegged at 4.10 and a draw is at 3.55 in the 1X2 market.

Assuming they’ll emerge victorious against Watford tomorrow, Chelsea will be heading into this contest being the first club to grab double digit wins so far in the 2021/2022 season.

Despite having to deal with selection headaches brought about by injuries and fitness concerns, it seems that Thomas Tuchel is merely reshuffling his pack – which just goes to show how deep their squad is.

Their quality is better than West Ham’s, so we wouldn’t be surprised if they’ll be able to take maximum points for this upcoming match.
