Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley
Both Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley still have so much to play for as the Premier League season winds down.
Spurs, at the time of this writing, are still chasing the fourth and final Champions League spot. Although, things could very well change when they face fierce rivals Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Burnley are busy fighting for their Premier League lives as they sit just one spot above the relegation zone.
The Premier League 2022 betting odds have Spurs as overwhelming favourites to come out of this high-stakes showdown on top. But can the battling Clarets pull off a massive shock in the capital?
Talking Points
Tottenham’s top-four hopes still alive… for now
Tottenham’s hopes of claiming the fourth and final Champions League spot are largely dependent on the result of their North London Derby against Arsenal in midweek. Spurs will come into that match four points behind the Gunners.
Should Spurs lose, they would be officially eliminated as they would be seven points adrift with just two games left in the season. And with essentially nothing left to play for, Antonio Conte could very well field a much-weakened side in the last two games, beginning at Burnley.
But if Spurs win or draw, then Conte will surely play his mostly settled starting XI led by the fantastic front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski as they continue their chase for Champions League football.
Son is having a fantastic end to the season and has scored nine goals in his last seven games. He is now up to 20 goals on the season, just two behind Mohamed Salah in the race for the Golden Boot.
Conte has hardly made any changes to his first-choice team, with only the wing-backs occasionally getting rotated. But with Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon both out injured, Emerson Royal and Ryan Sessegnon look set to finish the season on the wings.
Burnley suffer first setback under caretaker boss
Burnley’s remarkable run of Premier League 2022 results under caretaker boss Mike Jackson finally came to an end as they lost 3-1 at home against Aston Villa. It was the Clarets’ first defeat in five games under Jackson and snapped their run of three wins on the bounce.
It was also a disappointing showing at home by Burnley, who had been in fine form at Turf Moor and had kept back-to-back clean sheets.
Luckily for them, Leeds continue to lose and remain in the third and final relegation spot, with Burnley ahead only by goal difference.
Star centre-back James Tarkowski was forced off early in the second half against Villa due to a hamstring injury, and his status for the Spurs match remains unclear.
Should Tarkowski fail to get fit in time, 31-year-old Kevin Long looks set to make only his second start of the season.
Meanwhile, Maxwel Cornet, who scored a late consolation goal against Villa, could get the start over Ashley Barnes alongside Wout Weghorst.
Burnley have been brutal away from home this season, with just two wins and 13 points in 17 games. However, they did pick up a 2-1 win over Watford in their most recent away match thanks to two late goals from Jack Cork and Josh Brownhill.
History
Tottenham have a 9-3 edge in wins over Burnley in the Premier League era, with three draws.
Although, Burnley did beat Spurs 1-0 at Turf Moor in their first meeting this season. Clarets captain Ben Mee got the decisive goal which snapped Spurs’ three-game win streak against Burnley in all competitions.
Although, Burnley have an awful record away at Tottenham. They have not beaten Spurs at North London since a 4-1 League Cup victory in 1983. And you’d have to go back to 1974 for Burnley’s last league win away to Spurs.
Betting Tip
SBOTOP odds have Spurs as massive 1.33 favourites to beat Burnley at home. The Clarets are priced at an astronomical 10.00, by far the biggest underdogs of the round, while a draw is 4.50.
Things could very well change depending on what happens in the North London derby, but I still expect Spurs to be in the top-four race when they face Burnley.
With both teams still having all to play for, this has the makings of a competitive battle. Despite the quick turnaround from the North London Derby, Spurs should still have the weapons to get the win at home, but Burnley will battle and make it a low-scoring match.
