Premier League: Spurs and Red Devils Pivotal Decisions in Winter Transfer Window

countdown banner

It’s been a busy winter transfer window in the Premier League, and things will surely intensify as the deadline comes nearer. Tottenham struck gold, while Manchester United are making the hard decisions. Meanwhile, world-class talents are slowly pivoting to the allure of the English top flight, but it will take a lot more time, effort, and money for some transfers to materialise.

Timo Werner fills in for Son

Spurs confirm the signing of German forward Timo Werner on a loan from RB Leipzig in hopes that the former Chelsea star could keep Tottenham afloat while their poster boy, Son Heung-min, flies to the Middle East to represent the Korea Republic in the AFC Asian Cup.

To be fair, filling a Son-sized void is a tall order for Werner, but Tottenham are hoping that Werner’s activity on the field will generate some offence for his new teammates in North London.

Werner played for Chelsea from 2020–22 and was a key part of the Blues’ run in the UEFA Champions League. He was able to tally 23 goals in 89 appearances, donning the Chelsea crest on his chest.

The German then joined Marco Rose and RB Leipzig after his pedestrian stint at Chelsea. Under Rose, Werner only made four starts this term but was able to score a respectable amount of goals (16) last season.

This signing won’t move the needle for Tottenham’s Premier League 2024 odds, but it’s certain that they acquired a hungry and inspired footballer who is keen on proving his doubters wrong.

“I hope I can be the best player I can be here. I can play every position in attack. When I left the Premier League I missed it because it is the best league in the world. When I joined my old club, I said I wanted to be a winner and in the end we won the Champions League, so it should not be too bad to say I come here to win titles.” Werder stated.

Postecoglou is driven to keep making moves after successfully signing Werder, as he has Genoa’s Radu Dragusin as his next target.

Mbappe’s possible pivot to the Premier League

The Kylian Mbappe saga has been one of the hottest stories to follow in the football world, and it seems like it’ll headline Premier League 2024 news stories as the PSG star is considering a move to the Premier League.

The Frenchman’s links to La Liga giants Real Madrid are slowly simmering down, as the 25-year-old was rumored to already know what the Los Blancos are offering for his services, giving Mbappe a hefty pre-contract offer. But Mbappe’s representatives made it clear that there have been no negotiations or deals that have transpired with any other team.

It’s the last six months of the PSG star’s contract, which expires in June, and with no concrete developments materialising, SBOTOP’s guess as to where Kylian Mbappe will land is as good as yours.

This transfer soap opera has been one of the most unpredictable times in football history, but with all the uncertainties surrounding Mbappe’s destination, one thing’s for sure: nothing has been decided.

Jadon Sancho finally freed from Ten Hag’s shackles

The Red Devils haven’t been utilizing Sancho’s talents ever since his messy fallout with manager Erik ten Hag last September, and he has been completely exiled from the starting squad.

Manchester United have reportedly reached a broad agreement to reunite Sancho with Borussia Dortmund. According to several reports, the loan for Jadon Sancho is already a done deal, and the Bundesliga giants expect the exiled Sancho to join the squad in the next couple of days.

According to sources, the loan agreement is worth a minimum of around £3.5 million, with BVB covering a portion of the 23-year-old’s salary. There’s no buy option, which is understandable given that Manchester United paid a hefty price to acquire the former Dortmund player.

The winger’s stint at Old Trafford has left some, if not most, United fans disappointed, but the end to Sancho and Ten Hag’s dramatic relationship could only be beneficial for both parties, if you ask this SBOTOP writer.

Sancho’s time with Dortmund will be a pivotal stretch in the young lad’s career. Now, he has the chance to prove himself as a footballer and as a man. With Ten Hag’s shackles taken off, he could and should be able to prove doubters wrong, for his sake.

Zubimendi, a need more than a want for Arsenal

The Gunners look to persuade Martin Zubimendi to move to Premier League this January
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta looks disappointed during their 2-0 loss to Liverpool in the FA Cup

The Gunners are struggling in the top flight, winning just one of their last five Premier League matches and losing to Liverpool in the FA Cup. Arteta’s outfit was once at the summit of the league table, but due to injuries and an uninspired stretch, Arsenal have slowly slipped down to the fourth spot in the Premier League table.

Which brings us to Martin Zubimendi. The Spanish midfielder has been in form for Real Sociedad and has been on Arsenal’s radar since last season. The Spanish midfielder played a key role in La Real’s run in the Champions League.

Arteta’s perpetual interest in Zubimendi leans on him being one of the cornerstones of the future of Arsenal’s midfield. But what was once just a luxury seems to be more of a need at this point in the season.

With Barcelona’s interest in the midfielder simmering down, Arsenal seem to be the frontrunners if the Spaniard does decide to make a transfer materialise. It was reported that Arteta’s side submitted a £53 million transfer bid for Zubimendi but failed.

Arsenal’s interest and money are there for Zubimendi’s taking, but the 24-year-old remains reluctant to leave Real Sociedad.

“I have never planned to leave Real Sociedad, I always say that. I love life here, at home, I’m so happy here. The values of this club are the same as mine so I feel very good, I always said that I’m happy.” The midfielder exclaimed.
