Premier League: Sheffield United Need a Miracle Against Wolves

countdown banner

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Sheffield United

Sheffield United look down and out, but that shouldn’t discourage them from going down swinging with only 13 matchdays remaining.

The Blades are currently at the bottom of the Premier League standings with only 13 points. And unless they can start stringing together a positive run of results, it’s only a matter of time before they’ll head back to the Championship next season.

After suffering a brutal 5-0 loss against Brighton on Sunday, up next for Chris Wilder’s men are the Wolves, who are pushing for a spot in the top half of the table.

Gary O’Neil’s men are currently 11th, level with 10th-seeded Chelsea with 35 points, and they have won two of their last three after defeating the Spurs 2-1 on Saturday.

Talking Points

Wolves are worried about Cunha

Matheus Cunha was noticeably absent against Tottenham, as he is recovering from the hamstring injury he sustained in the Wolves’ 2-0 victory over Brentford two weeks ago.

According to Premier League 2024 news, the Brazilian striker is fortunately the only player unavailable against Sheffield United. However, there are fears that he might be out for a significant period of time.

The Wolves did not put a specific timeline on Cunha’s recovery, which has fans bracing for the worst since he has been one of the best forwards in the Premier League this season with 11 goals and seven assists.

With Cunha out, the Wolves will rely on Hwang Hee-Chan, Pedro Neto, and Pablo Sarabia to create goals. Hwang also has 11 goals this season, while Neto and Sarabia are two of the team’s best playmakers, with five goals and 19 assists combined.

Jeanricner Bellegarde is another option off the bench, although he hasn’t produced much, while Joao Gomes has shown that he can score too when he had a brace against the Spurs.

Sheffield United have terrible luck with injuries

On the other hand, Sheffield United are at a numbers disadvantage heading into this contest, as seven players are listed out while two are questionable to play.

Mason Holgate is suspended after being booked a red card against Brighton in the 13th minute, while Max Lowe (ankle), John Egan (ankle), Chris Basham (ankle), George Baldock (undisclosed), Daniel Jebbison (illness), and Rhys Norrington-Davies (thigh) are all unfit, and Cameron Archer (calf) and Ben Brereton Diaz (thigh) are questionable.

Since most of them are defenders, that explains why the Blades have the worst goal difference in the Premier League (-43) after conceding a whopping 65 goals in 25 matchdays, including 11 opponent goals in their last three outings.

In terms of scoring goals, they haven’t done much there either. Their top scorer is James McAtee with five goals, followed by Oliver McBurnie and Cameron Archer with four apiece.

With minutes up for grabs, this is the perfect time for Rhian Brewster to step up in the final third for the Blades. The 23-year-old has yet to open his account this term.

History

Sheffield United actually defeated Wolves in what was one of their rare wins earlier this season, as Cameron Archer and Oliver Norwood nullified Jeanricner Bellegarde’s goal to secure a 2-1 victory at Bramall Lane in November.

If the Blades somehow win again this weekend, it’ll mark their first league double over Wolves since 1989-90, when they were promoted to the English top-flight.

Chris Wilder’s men will also aim to win back-to-back Premier League road matches for the first time since December 2019 after defeating Luton Town 3-1 two weeks ago.

However, the Wolves are unbeaten in their last eight league games against Sheffield United at Molineux (W4, D4) since a 3-1 loss in the Championship in October 2002, and they have won five of their last eight Premier League matches (D1, L2).

Betting Tip

It’s not a surprise that the Wolves are the favourites to win on Sunday. The SBOTOP Premier League 2024 odds have the hosts winning at 1.44, whereas Sheffield United are 5.90 underdogs, and a draw is at 4.17 in the 1X2 market.

After losing in the reverse fixture, we feel that the Wolves are capable of bouncing back this time, hence our recommended bet above.

Moreover, Total Goal 2-3 at 1.91 and Over 2.75 at 1.90 are good bets to think about since there should be enough goals to go by this weekend.

However, if you fancy the Blades completing a league double over the Wolves, then check out a Correct Score of 2-1 in favour of Chris Wilder’s side – the result of their reverse fixture – because it is priced at a staggering 20.00.
