With nine rounds to go in the 2021/22 Premier League nothing is yet decided and the title race has suddenly exploded into life as Liverpool have chopped Manchester City’s lead to a single point.
There is a three way battle for the final Champions League spot, with Arsenal currently in charge, while the relegation scrap looks like one of three, maybe four, teams will drop to the Championship along with Norwich City and most likely Watford.
Whichever battle you are fighting, now is the time to go on a winning run so let’s take a look at the teams which are currently stringing together the best Premier League 2022 results, as we hurtle towards the business end of the campaign.
Liverpool’s quadruple quest
Not so long ago the Premier League 2022 betting odds had the title nailed on in Sky Blue colours but Liverpool are down to a price of 2.75 in this two horse race. While Pep Guardiola’s City are widely viewed as the best all round team, easy on the eye and with the deepest pool of talent, they have stuttered a little recently, losing a five goal thriller to Spurs and then drawing with Crystal Palace last week.
Meanwhile Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have embarked on a nine match winning run in the league while also winning the Carabao Cup. So while City are hunting a treble, Liverpool are still in four competitions and the two juggernauts collide twice in April, in the FA Cup and in a potential title decider at the Etihad.
Chelsea thriving on the pitch
While Chelsea Football Club is in disarray off the pitch the players have remained supremely focussed under the careful guidance of the excellent coach Thomas Tuchel. The Blues have won 12 of their last 13 games, in all competitions. The only disappointment came in the Carabao Cup final which they lost to Liverpool on penalties, and they are successfully holding off a challenge from Arsenal having won their last five games in the league. Still in the FA Cup and Champions League, this could still be a successful campaign for Chelsea.
North London rivalry is bubbling up nicely
Arsenal won their sixth league game in seven last weekend, beating Aston Villa 1-0 to go four points clear of Manchester United, who began the weekend in fifth place. Head coach Mikel Arteta seems to be getting it right at the Emirates with his young team; and players like Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli are coming on in leaps and bounds. The Gunners are the favourites to finish in fourth but North London rivals
Spurs responded on Sunday in their derby clash with West Ham, running out 3-1 winners to make it four wins in five and climb to fifth. Harry Kane is back on song and he made two assists in the victory over the Hammers while Heung-Min Son scored two goals. The Whites were simply sensational in a recent 5-0 destruction of Everton and head coach Antonio Conte is heaping the pressure on Arteta, saying: “There are nine games to go and for us every game has to be a final. At the moment they have a good advantage, especially because they are working with the same coach for many years and have more transfer widows with the same coach.”
Who can beat the drop?
Burnley are the most likely team to slip out of the top flight, after six years in the Premier League, at a SBOTOP price of 1.65. But things can change quickly at the bottom end of the table, as back to back wins can put a completely different complexion on the picture. Just two weeks ago Brentford were in freefall, losing eight in nine games, but wins over Norwich and Burnley took the Bees up to 30 points and now the quest is to avoid seven defeats in their last eight.
Leeds did themselves a huge favour with a comeback win over Wolves last week. 2-0 down early in the second half the Whites took advantage of the dismissal of Wolves striker Raul Jimenez to win 3-2 and their odds went out to 4.00.
After a dreadful run of form Everton too picked up a crucial 1-0 win over Newcastle United thanks to a 99th minute Alex Iwobi goal; but the Toffees returned to type on Sunday, taking a 4-0 FA Cup spanking from Crystal Palace. At 3.50 to be relegated Frank Lampard’s team is vulnerable if Burnley, who have the kindest run-in and games in hand, can recover their form in April. Everton face West Ham away next, and then travel to Turf Moor to meet the Clarets in a huge clash before going on to face Manchester United, Leicester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the next four.
