Manchester City’s reign in the Premier League may not be the only one that’s coming to an end. In fact, they’re in danger of being expelled from the English top-flight altogether.
It’s been a miserable time for the Sky Blues, as they were beaten by Tottenham. And then recent reports emerged that the Premier League was accusing them of breaking numerous rules these past few years.
On the other side of Manchester, United got back on the winning track, but they’ll lose a key player in the upcoming days, while Leeds United now have a head coaching vacancy.
As always, there’s so much happening here in the English top-flight, so continue to read on below to keep up with the latest Premier League 2023 updates.
Premier League charges City for multiple breaches
The Premier League has charged Manchester City with violating its financial regulations, which could lead to the harshest penalties in league history.
They were accused of more than 100 infractions, which include failing to give accurate financial information about contractual payments made to certain managers and players and refusing to comply with the league’s investigation committee.
An independent commission outlined these charges after recently concluding their four-year investigation. The alleged violations are said to have occurred throughout the course of nine seasons, from 2009–10 to 2017–18.
Manchester City issued a statement on Monday, saying that they were “surprised” by these alleged breaches of the Premier League rules and that they’re looking to cooperate to “put this matter to rest once and for all.”
The independent commission can impose severe punishments on Manchester City, including suspensions, point deductions, order compensation, and cancellation of player registrations, or they can remove them from the Premier League altogether.
Since the takeover of Sheikh Mansour in 2008, Manchester City have won six Premierships, six EFL Cups, and two FA Cups. All of those trophies might be delegitimized if the league’s charges against them are upheld.
Pep Guardiola, the man behind the club’s greatest triumphs, has been a staunch defender of the club whenever there are allegations against them. But last year, he said that he told the higher-ups that he would leave his post if they had lied to him.
United get the win, but lose their star in the process
Manchester United improved their SBOTOP Premier League 2023 odds of winning a title last weekend as they beat Crystal Palace in their rematch. It also helped that Arsenal, Manchester City, and Newcastle all dropped points.
Erik ten Hag’s side currently has 42 points, which is only eight points away from the table leaders, Arsenal.
Bruno Fernandes drew first blood for the Red Devils after seven minutes via a penalty kick, and Marcus Rashford put them ahead by two goals 55 minutes later.
But the hosts were reduced to 10 men when a scrap broke out after Jeffrey Schlupp shoved Antony into the advertising board. Casemiro was seen grabbing Will Hughes’ neck, and the VAR decided that he deserved to be given a straight red card.
Schlupp, meanwhile, was only given a yellow card, and he scored Crystal Palace’s only goal six minutes later.
United held on to win 2-1, but they’ll be without Casemiro in their next three Premier League games against Leeds United (twice) and Leicester City. However, the former Real Madrid man is expected to be available against Barcelona in their Europa League tie.
Given that he has consistently been a member of Erik ten Hag’s starting XI, the fact that he has 12 days to recover before facing the Blaugrana may really be a blessing in disguise.
In the meantime, newly acquired Marcel Sabitzer is going to be thrust into the starting XI, and he’ll get to prove his worth for the club.
Leeds search for a new coach amid relegation worries
The Whites are in the midst of another relegation battle, and Jesse Marsch is no longer the man trying to get them out of it this time.
After one year in the job, Jesse Marsch has been sacked after they lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, which extended their drought to seven consecutive Premier League games.
Leeds United are in 17th place with 18 points, which is level with 18th-placed Everton.
Until a replacement for Jesse Marsch is found, the team will be coached by Michael Skubala, Paco Gallardo, and Chris Armas. One name that has been linked to succeeding Marsch is Carlos Corberan, who was one of Marcelo Bielsa’s top assistants. Corberan is now the head coach of West Brom, who are currently sixth in the Championship.
