Premier League: Magpies to Blow Off Some Steam at Vitality Stadium

countdown banner

Bournemouth vs Newcastle United

Both the Cherries and the Magpies seek to avenge their recent losses when they face off at Vitality Stadium for a classic Premier League showdown.

With the home team trying to hold on to their EPL spot, expect a valiant effort from Bournemouth to fend off Eddie Howe and the rest of Newcastle United. Meanwhile, the Magpies are coming off a humbling clean-sheet defeat against Dortmund in the Champions League, so they are surely eager to blow off some steam against a struggling Bournemouth squad.

Talking Points

Newcastle heads to the EFL quarter-finals

The Magpies are one of the clubs in the English top flight that have seen constant improvement in recent years. One would typically find them in the middle of the pack, finishing between 10th and 13th since their promotion back to the Premier League in the 2017-2018 season.

Their resurgence last season was spearheaded by manager Eddie Howe’s reconstruction of the team. The Magpies elevated their game and enforced their brand of football last season and managed to finish in fourth place, towering over clubs like Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea. They finished with 71 points, just four points behind Manchester United, who had a stellar end to their season.

Eddie Howe and his team picked up where they left off, as they’ve been one of the most convincing clubs after 11 games in this year’s campaign. They have won three of their last five games in the EPL, while reaching the EPL quarter-final after they humbled Manchester United with a 0-3 clean sheet at Old Trafford.

Interestingly enough, Manchester United led Newcastle in shots, possession, and passes in their matchup. Ten Hag’s depleted defence was exploited as the Magpies sliced and carried the ball with little resistance, especially in the first half.

After Livramento effortlessly carried the ball from their side of the pitch up to a dangerous distance from United’s box, Miguel Almiron calmly hammered the ball past Onana to put Newcastle up 0-1 in minute 29. A few minutes later, Lewis Hall followed up with a stunning left-foot strike that bent and slotted its way to the back of the net to put his team up by two goals. In the second half, Joe Willock sealed the deal for the Magpies when he mounted an aggressive counter-attack that again faced little to no resistance from United’s defence. Newcastle came out of Old Trafford unscathed, winning against United 0-3.

Howe’s team is faring well across all competitions, except in the Champions League, where they are currently in last place in Group F. But with their current form in the Premier League, their upcoming match against a struggling Bournemouth should be a cakewalk for the boys from Tyneside.

Bournemouth try to dodge relegation

Bournemouth once again find themselves at the bottom of the Premier League table. Andoni Iraola and the rest of his team were eliminated from the EFL Cup last month when they hosted Liverpool at Vitality Stadium. The home team fell to the Reds 1-2 in their Round of 16 bout, forcing Bournemouth to concede their EFL cup bid and focus solely on the Premier League.

They lost four of their last five EPL matches, certainly not their desired Premier League 2023 results, but they managed to get a win against 19th-placed Burnley in October. With that win, the Cherries find themselves in the 18th spot on the league table with a total of six league points. Bournemouth, Burnley, and Sheffield United are the three teams that are at risk of being relegated to the Championship.

It is still very early in the season, but Iraola and the rest of the Cherries should display some sense of urgency if they want to keep their spot in the English top flight, and they have a great opportunity to start their charge up the league table against a visiting Newcastle squad.

History

These clubs are well-acquainted, as they have met a total of 11 times coming into their next EPL match. The Magpies won five of those 11 matches, while the Cherries have only won twice.

Bournemouth have yet to win at Vitality Stadium against Newcastle. The Magpies came out of Vitality Stadium as the winners twice, and managed to tally a draw three times. The last time these two met in the EFL Cup, the Magpies beat Bournemouth with a respectable 1-0 score line.

Betting Tip

The SBOTOP Premier League 2023 betting odds price this match with the visiting Magpies as the heavy favourites to win. With a price of 1.68, I personally think that the line holds enough value to be considered. Another line that holds enough value and excitement is O/U over 2.5 at 1.66. In their past 11 matches, these rivals have tallied a total of 30 goals. And with each of these teams facing unique challenges at this point in their campaigns, expect both squads to be hungry to score as much goals as they can. Also, Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak are both in top form, so goals over 2.5 aren’t too lofty for Newcastle United alone.
