Premier League: Could This be Harry’s Year?

countdown banner

He is widely regarded as one of the very best strikers in world football and he’s certainly one of the most prolific goal scorers in Premier League history, but Tottenham hitman Harry Kane has never picked up a team winners medal in his 13 seasons in the game.

Kane knows that his loyalty to Tottenham Hotspur has cost him dearly when he looks at his medal cabinet, but he’s a rare beast these days to show such commitment to one club.

He did waver last season, though, hoping for a move to Manchester City but that didn’t materialise and he still leads the line for Spurs.

Now 29, he’s hoping that he can finally break this duck either with Tottenham Hotspur in domestic football or with England in the Qatar World Cup.

And at Spurs, he has a proven winner in the dugout with head coach Antonio Conte brought in to bring some long-awaited silverware to the club. The early season Premier League 2022 betting odds pitch Tottenham as fourth favourites at the moment but they could be dark horses.

Kane has won plenty of plaudits personally in his prolific scoring career where he has established himself as one the best hitmen the big European leagues have ever seen.

He ranks as the second-highest scorer in Tottenham’s history, behind only the legendary Jimmy Greaves, while only Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney have scored more than Kane in the history of the Premier League.

In 2016 and 2017, the Spurs talisman was the league’s top scorer, and in the following campaign he scored a whopping 41 goals from 48 games in all competitions while also winning the Golden Boot at the Russia World Cup in 2018 as England reached the semi-finals.

He has scored 50 goals in 71 internationals and is fast approaching the all-time top scorer Rooney, who bagged 53 goals in 120 appearances.

Here at SBOTOP, we were set to report on Spurs’ game with Manchester City this weekend. But following the sad passing of the Queen, football fixtures have been postponed.

So let’s take the time to analyse if Kane can pick up a medal or two this season.

Can Harry finally win team silverware?

Kane has had some near misses in terms of winning trophies with both club and country.

In 2016, when Leicester City stunned the football world by winning the Premier League at odds of 5001, Spurs had their biggest chance.

With Manchester City and Chelsea both underperforming, it looked like Tottenham would be the team to chase down the Foxes but they choked and finished third.

The following season they did finish second behind Antonio Conte’s Chelsea. In 2019, Mauricio Pochettino led them to the Champions League final but Spurs simply didn’t show up in a 2-0 loss to Liverpool.

And last year for England, Kane suffered his biggest heartbreak as the Three Lions lost a penalty shootout final to Italy after he had put his team ahead, smashing home his own spot-kick.

Back to the present. While Arsenal have taken the early season plaudits and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland is dominating the Premier League 2022 news thanks to his explosive start to life at Manchester City, Spurs have been ticking along nicely and sit in third place in the table, level on points with the Sky Blues and one point behind leaders Arsenal.

We are still at the early stage of the campaign but Spurs could well last the course on current evidence as Conte has begun to put his personal mark on the team.

The Italian loves to win and hates to lose, and he will take both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup deadly seriously.

Meanwhile, England are set to embark on a World Cup journey in Qatar where they will start the tournament as one of the favourites.

More personal glory?

Kane has won his fair share of Golden Boots for club and country but it will be a big ask for him to finish this Premier League campaign as top scorer.

He has made a quicker start than he normally does and is currently in third place on five goals, alongside Brentford’s Ivan Toney and one behind Fulham’s Alexandar Mitrovic but crucially five behind City’s scoring machine Haaland.

Kane’s regular rivals, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy, are nowhere to be seen.

Kane wouldn’t wish injury on a fellow professionals, but that is his best chance of winning the Premier League Golden Boot.

So why not more World Cup glory? He’s the current favourite to win the Golden Boot in Qatar ahead of the French pair of Kylian Mbappe and Karin Benzema, and it helps Kane that they play for the same team.  England are third favourites to win the trophy behind Brazil and France, so the Spurs man has a few chances to open his trophy cabinet again and only time will tell.
