Premier League: Capital City Six Pointer!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool

There is a big fortnight coming up in the Premier League friends before we can all sit back and enjoy the World Cup in Qatar.

For football fans around the world, it means non-stop action, but the players in Europe’s top leagues must retain 100-per cent focus on domestic matters as there are crucial points to be won over the next two weeks – no more so than in England’s top-flight.

The pick of the bunch this weekend sees Jurgen Klopp take his struggling Liverpool to London to face Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur. While Spurs are riding high in third place in the Premier League, the Reds are languishing in ninth and 15 points behind leaders Arsenal.

With Manchester United currently enjoying something of a resurgence, the current Premier League 2022 betting odds rate Tottenham and Liverpool as fourth and fifth favorites for the title. And more significantly, that points to one of them missing out on a Champions League place, particularly with Chelsea loitering in the same mix.

Both teams come into the game on the back of a Champions League win. But while Tottenham fought back to win their last Premier League game against Bournemouth, Liverpool have suffered back-to-back league defeats to strugglers Nottingham Forest and Leeds United.

And of course, this match features two of the hottest strikers in world football.

Talking Points

Kane vs Salah

Erling Haaland is the strong favorite to win the Premier League Golden Boot this year. But in second and third spots, we have Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah at SBOTOP odds of 13.00 and 51.00.

Kane has scored 10 goals already while Roberto Firmino is Liverpool’s top scorer with six league goals. But there are signs that Salah is finding some momentum and he has now scored four goals and made four assists in the Premier League while topping the list of Champions League top scorers with seven goals in the group stage.

The Reds have been hampered by injury in the striking department with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz out until after the World Cup, and so they are relying heavily on their talisman who never stays quiet for long.

Down in London, Kane is enjoying his best start to a campaign for a while and he is looking forward to leading England in Qatar. With 193 goals in 292 games for Spurs and 51 in 75 for England, it is little surprise that King Harry has been just awarded the Freedom of the City of London.

A good week in Europe

Spurs made it to the last 16 of the Champions League thanks to a late comeback at the Stade Velodrome in Marseilles.

The Whites were under the cosh for much of the first half and made rare appearances in the attacking half as Olympique Marseilles deservedly took the lead through defender Chancel Mbemba.

But Conte’s side is not easy to beat and a never-say-die attitude saw Clement Lenglet head in an equaliser and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg score a stoppage time winner.

After his goal in UCL, Pierre Hojbjerg might be able to secure Tottenham's victory over Liverpool in Premier League
Pierre Emille-Hojbjerg will try to extend his luck and seal victory in their next Premier League game.

Kane said: “Fitness-wise we’re a really strong team so we feel like we can always come strong in the second half. Just being in that situation there’s not too much panic.”

Liverpool’s Premier League 2022 results have been particularly disappointing this season so their home Champions League clash against Napoli gave the Reds a chance to give their fans a lift, which they did emphatically by beating the Italians thanks to late goals from Salah and Darwin Nunez.

It was the perfect way for the Anfield crowd to banish the memory of a 2-1 defeat to Leeds and roar they strike on to the top of the Golden Boot race.

Both Liverpool and Napoli advance to the last 16.

History

With 31 wins to 14, Liverpool have had the better of their head-to-head encounters with Tottenham. But both games last season ended in a draw – 1-1 at Anfield and 2-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In terms of recent form, Tottenham have won three, drawn one, and lost two of the last six games in all competitions, while Liverpool have won four and lost two.

Tottenham last beat the Reds at home in 2017, but Klopp’s men have been poor on the road in the league with two draws and three defeats to show for their travels.

Betting Tip

Tottenham are at 2.78 to win this game with Liverpool at 2.23 and the draw at 3.44, and we’re in for a superb 95 minutes between two top four hopefuls which makes it a six-pointer even at this stage of the campaign.

With home advantage and a more satisfying start to the season under their belts, I think the hosts have an advantage that Liverpool will find it hard to overturn.
