Fergie Headlines List of the Greatest Premier League Managers Ever

countdown banner

Since its inception in 1992, the Premier League has grown into one of the most recognisable football leagues in the world.

The reason why it is so is because this is where most of the best teams, players, and managers compete. And given its popularity and competitiveness, no wonder the stars from the other leagues have always dreamed of taking their talents to England.

Over the last 21 seasons, 11 different managers have hoisted the Premier League trophy, which obviously plays a huge role in making this particular list.

So, without further ado, read more below as SBOTOP lists the five greatest managers in the league’s storied history.

Sir Alex Ferguson

We would be remiss not to start this list with the greatest football manager of all time, Sir Alex Ferguson, because his glittering CV speaks for itself.

Up to this day, Fergie has the distinction of having the most titles in Premier League history, with 13, and it’s not even close. And overall, during his 26-year reign at Manchester United, he has won 38 major trophies, the most so far by a single manager.

With no league title in 26 years, many were calling for Sir Alex Ferguson to be fired, but it was a good thing that the club stood by him.

Steve Bruce’s late double against Sheffield Wednesday changed everything for the Red Devils late in the 1992-93 season, as they went on to win their final five games, leading to them winning the inaugural Premier League trophy.

And as they say, the rest is history. Today, Manchester United are still searching for their first Premier League trophy since they last won it in 2012-13, Fergie’s final season in charge.

Pep Guardiola

With five Premier League trophies in his seven seasons in charge at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola is certainly up there as one of the league’s greatest managers of all time.

Prior to his arrival at the Etihad in 2016, Guardiola already had an extensive resume with his stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but he took things to another level at Manchester City, elevating them into the juggernauts that we know now.

His best English top-flight campaign was when he won his first Premier League trophy. In the 2017-18 season, the Sky Blues established the record for the biggest title-winning margin (at least 19 points), the record for most points in a single season (100), the record for most goals scored in a single season (106), and the highest goal difference (79), among others.

This year, the reigning Champions League titlists remain the huge favourites to win it all again, as per the Premier League 2023 odds. They are currently at the top of the standings with 28 points following a good stretch of Premier League 2023 results.

Jurgen Klopp

After three decades of waiting, Liverpool have finally won their first Premier League trophy in 2019-20 under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp.

In his seven full seasons at Anfield, the German boss has made Liverpool one of the most entertaining and formidable sides today because he is a prodigy of Ralf Rangnick, the originator of gegenpressing.

Other than their 2019-20 Premier League triumph, the Reds have also won the FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Community Shield in 2022, as well as the 2018-19 Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup under Klopp.

Arsene Wenger

If you think about Arsenal, Arsene Wenger will quickly come to mind, given the success he has brought to the club for around two decades.

Wenger is the first-ever non-British head coach to win an English top-flight title in 1998, and he owns the record for most games as a manager in Premier League history (828).

His best achievement at the Emirates was guiding the “Invincibles” to winning the 2003-04 title when they didn’t suffer a single defeat throughout the season, a feat that hasn’t been replicated up to this day.

Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho is one of the few coaches who has won the Premier League title more than once.

Unlike the other managers on this list, the Special One has had stints with different Premier League clubs, although most of his success was with Chelsea.

Fresh from guiding Porto to Champions League glory in 2004, Mourinho came to Stamford Bridge with aplomb, immediately ending the Blues’ 50-year top-flight title drought with a back-to-back in 2005 and 2006 before winning another one nine seasons later. At Manchester United, Mourinho won the 2016-17 EFL Cup, the 2016 Community Shield, and the 2016-17 Europa League. However, he never won anything at Tottenham from 2019 to 2021.
