Manchester United vs Chelsea
While Manchester City and Liverpool slug it out at the summit of the Premier League, the race for Champions League football has thrown up the big match on Sunday.
Premier League Manchester United vs Chelsea has long been one of the major fixtures in the English football calendar, and while, for now, they are not competing for the top prize, there is plenty at stake when these two heavyweights clash at the Theatre of Dreams.
With three games to go Chelsea occupies the coveted fourth place but with Arsenal a point behind and the Red Devils two further back they can’t afford a defeat. While the Blues have a better goal difference than their hosts, Maurizio Sarri will not want his team to have to depend on that.
After a brilliant start to his career as Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is having a torrid time and another defeat, after six in the last eight games, would be a disaster.
This huge match will be a treat for SBOBET 2019 Premier League fans, but it’s
going to be a nail biter for the Red Devils and the Blues.
Talking Points
Can Solskjaer work out Paul Pogba?
One of the most baffling things about the Red Devils’ poor run has been the form of World Cup winner Paul Pogba. He was dreadful in the first half of the season under Jose Mourinho, but after he’d seen off that manager his form took a dramatic upturn with the arrival of OGS. But he seems to have returned to type and his lacklustre displays have again attracted criticism.
He’s the only player outside Manchester City and Liverpool to make the PFA’s Team of the Year and that in itself is a mystery!
Pogba is not the only player under the spotlight at Old Trafford. Goalkeeper David de Gea has been the Red Devils’ best player in the recent difficult seasons but his form has taken a nosedive amidst speculation of a summer move to Real Madrid, possibly alongside Pogba.
The Red Devils showed some fighting spirit in the first half of Wednesday’s derby defeat to Manchester City. But De Gea has received criticism for his failure to keep out Leroy Sane’s crucial second goal, particularly after he picked four out of the net the previous weekend against Everton.
The mood at Old Trafford is a far cry from early March when a win over Southampton saw the Red Devils move into fourth and five points ahead of Chelsea. But the current poor run has made a mess of their top four hopes.
If OGS can somehow inspire his players onto victory against Chelsea it could all look so different again, with their final two games coming against relegated Huddersfield and, favourites to join the Terriers in the Championship, Cardiff City.
Sarri’s headaches at Chelsea
Having come under torrents of criticism for his delay in selecting Callum Hudson Odoi, Sarri will be rather upset having seen his young star limp off during the 2-2 draw with Burnley on Monday, and he’ll be out for the season with an Achilles problem.
That result was something of a disaster for the Blues, who had watched top four rivals Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester United all lose at the weekend. Beat Burnley and they would have been firmly in control but they couldn’t, and the ugly scenes at the end of the game show just how much that hurt Chelsea, as Sarri was sent to the stands.
Influential midfielder N’Golo Kante was also injured against the Clarets and defender Antonio Rudiger is still struggling with a knee injury. Kante could well return, but Rudiger is more doubtful.
Eden Hazard was, once again, Chelsea’s best player making the first goal and looking the most likely to break down a stubborn Burnley defence. And he’ll be determined to help his team make amends at Old Trafford. At the very least the Blues must avoid defeat, which would put Manchester United out of the running.
History
The historic Manchester United vs Chelsea results tell the story of a real ding dong battle. Chelsea has had the edge in the head-to-head clashes, winning 25 to Manchester United’s 21 of the 67 fixtures in the Premier League era.
United arrive with five defeats in six and Chelsea has had one loss in that period.
But when playing at home, Man Utd has not lost to Chelsea in their last five encounters so that should provide some hope to Red Devils fans.
Betting Tip
Manchester United vs Chelsea | Chelsea Draw no Bet @ 1.99 | |
April 28, 23:30 (GMT+8) |
We can’t split these two teams, with home advantage for the Red Devils meaning the latest Manchester United vs Chelsea betting odds pitch them both at 2.67 to win with the draw at 3.10.
A 1-1 draw at 5.80 is the most likely result, and I think Chelsea will be happy with that, but in Hazard they have the best player who could win the game.
