Brentford vs Liverpool
Brentford and Liverpool will meet for the first time on Saturday in a tasty teatime clash between two attacking sides which have very differing ambitions.
The Bees have made a great start to their first Premier League campaign with eight points lifting them to a healthy ninth place after five rounds, but highly rated boss Thomas Frank knows this will be a long hard season and a game at home to Liverpool will be a serious test of his team’s top flight credentials.
Premier League: Brentford vs Liverpool is a fixture the Bees fans could only have dreamt of before the arrival of Frank as head coach, but they have already beaten Arsenal so they have no respect for reputation. On the other hand, while Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will take their opponents deadly seriously, they won’t be scared of a bee sting.
Talking Points
High flying Bees are having a blast
Frank led Brentford to the Premier League with a fearless approach and they have already picked up two wins and two draws in their debut season. The Bees earned their first away win of the season against Wolves last weekend with a comfortable 2-0 result, the same score line as a stunned Arsenal suffered at the hands of Brentford on the opening day of the season.
Star striker Ivan Toney is likely to make his mark at some point in the Brentford vs Liverpool highlights reel, and he scored his second goal of the season to open the scoring against Wolves from the penalty spot. The London side then made it 0-2 when Toney crossed for strike partner Bryan Mbeumo for his first Premier League goal.
The Bees’ second string strikers staked their claim for consideration this week as Brentford made it through to the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup. Marcus Forss scored four as the they destroyed Oldham Athletic, while Yoane Wissa bagged a brace including a spectacular overhead kick.
The hosts will be without Grenadian midfielder Shandon Baptiste as he was sent off for a daft second yellow card at Wolves, five minutes after receiving his first.
Mane back on form for Liverpool
The Reds are at 4.50 with SBOTOP to win the 2022 Premier League title and with the favourite duo of Chelsea and Manchester City set to meet this weekend Klopp’s team have a good chance to grab an advantage over one of their big rivals.
Last season Manchester City strolled to the title while, at one point late in the season, a top four place for Liverpool was in doubt. The Reds badly missed centre back colossus Virgil van Dijk during the 2020/21 campaign and the form of Senegalese striker Sadio Mane was nowhere near the level he achieved during the 2020 league winning season.
Sane has scored three league goals already this season, while top scorer Mo Salah has four and Diogo Jota has two. The Reds have been potent, with a three pronged attack over the past few seasons, and with Roberto Firmino currently sidelined Jota and Mane are taking their chances. Salah scored his 100th Liverpool goal in the recent 0-3 victory away to Leeds, the same score line as the Reds inflicted on Norwich in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Jurgen Klopp made sweeping changes to his cup team at Carrow Road and Takumi Minamino scored twice while Divock Origi added a third. Joe Gomez skippered the side and he’ll be joined by Van Dijk in the centre of defence at the Brentford Community Stadium.
History
With no previous meetings between these two teams, the pre-match Brentford vs Liverpool betting odds are dictated solely by current form and squad depth. This is new territory for both teams.
Liverpool have won the last six away from home and have scored three in each of their last four games, also beating Crystal Palace 3-0 and AC Milan 3-2 after coming back from behind against the Italians.
Brentford are in good nick too, winning three, drawing two and losing one of the last six in all competitions.
Betting Tip
Brentford vs Liverpool | Total Goals 2-3 @ 2.03 | |
September 26, 00:30 (GMT+8) |
At 1.46 to win Liverpool should come away with all three points from West London, but Van Dijk and co will have to be on their game to keep the Bees sting out of the way.
Brentford are at 6.57 to win, 3.97 to draw and 2.52 with double chance but I think Liverpool will steer clear of trouble and win with a bit to spare. Another 0-3 is at odds of 10.12, but 0-2 or even 1-2 are perfectly likely too.
