Chelsea vs Arsenal
Two of the most talented young coaches in world football are set to meet again as Chelsea host Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
There’s a full programme of Premier League football this week, with all 20 teams in action between Tuesday and Thursday, and the pick is the rematch between the Blues and the Gunners. Frank Lampard’s Chelsea inflicted a first home defeat on Arsenal head coach Mike Arteta in the final fixture of 2019, and the former Gunners’ midfield ace will be desperate to exact revenge on his opposite number.
Arteta is much admired at Arsenal and Lampard was a playing legend at Stamford Bridge, and now they come face to face on the touchline. We’ll learn a lot about their teams this week, just how ruthless are Lamps’ young Blues and how resilient is Arteta’s Arsenal.

Talking Points
Chelsea looking for consistency
Lampard’s youngsters saw off Burnley last week with a comfortable 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge but they followed it up with a 1-0 defeat away to Newcastle. The Blues dominated for much of the game, with 70 per cent possession, but they couldn’t break through a stubborn Newcastle defence and paid the price when Isaac Hayden headed a 94thr minute winner.
Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has been in superb scoring form this season and he came within inches of putting his side in charge when his nonchalant flick hit the Magpies crossbar in the first half. And midfield man Jorginho ran the show, making the most passes (114) and having the most touches (131) of any player on the pitch.
The latest Premier League 2020 betting odds still have the Blues odds on to win a top-four place, and another season in the Champions League would represent a very decent first year in charge for Lampard at his beloved club.
Arsenal must learn to cope without Auba
Arteta has plenty of work to do at the Emirates and he hasn’t been helped by the temporary absence of his most important player. The Gunners are without their captain and top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is suspended for three games following his red card for a horror tackle on Crystal Palace’s Max Meyer.
To add some context, the Gabon international has scored 40 per cent of the Gunners goals this season.
Alexandre Lacazette skippered the Gunners in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United at the weekend, and he will need to step up in this capital city clash if Arsenal are to come away with a much-needed win against Chelsea.
With all respect to Blades fans, a home draw with Sheffield United doesn’t sound like progress for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal but had it not been for a late John Fleck equaliser a win would have taken the Gunners up to ninth in the table and, crucially for their supporters, level on points with Spurs.
They didn’t really deserve all three points, though rising star Gabriel Martinelli steered the Gunners ahead and has received great encouragement from his captain.
Aubameyang was full of social media praise for the 18-year-old Martinelli saying: “Gabi’s gonna be a superstar. Not because of the goal but because of the attitude, energy and mindset.”
Arteta will hope his absent star is on the money.
History
The head-to-head meetings between these two London aristocrats could hardly be closer. The Gunners have a minute edge with 26 wins to Chelsea’s 25 and there have been 19 draws in the 70 matches played since 1993.
Chelsea beat the Gunners 4-1 in the 2019 Europa Cup final, and of course, Frank Lampard’s young team triumphed 1-2 at the Emirates as 2019 drew to a close. Aubameyang gave the Gunners a half time lead before the Blues came roaring back with goals in the last ten minutes from Jorginho and Tammy Abraham.
Though Arsenal have only won twice away from home this season, there is some encouragement to be had for Gunners fans, they are unbeaten away from home in six matches while the Blues are inconsistent at the Bridge.
Betting Tip
Chelsea vs Arsenal | Double Chance Arsenal or Draw @ 1.99 | |
January 22, 04:15 (GMT+8) |
At 1.75 to win the hosts are well fancied, while the draw is at 3.75 and Arsenal are at 4.30 to grab a surprise win.
But Chelsea haven’t been in their best form at home and they need to show the confidence they did against Burnley to see off the Gunners. And with Arteta’s side performing solidly away from home I’m backing them to deprive the Blues of a double.
