Premier League: Historic Rivalries are About to be Rekindled

countdown banner

There’s so much to look forward to in the upcoming 2021/22 season of the Premier League.

All 20 English top-flight teams are to duel once more in a grueling 38-matchday schedule, while most clubs have to balance their other commitments as well.

Being the defending champions, Manchester City own the highest Premier League 2021 odds to win the title despite not making any significant moves so far this offseason, while other contenders such as Chelsea, Manchester United, Leicester City, and Liverpool are not far behind.

West Ham United, Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton, and Leeds United finished at the middle last term and they’ll try to disrupt the status quo.

Looking down at the bottom of the table, newly-promoted sides in Norwich City, Watford, and Brentford aim to show everyone that they’re worthy of keeping their top-flight status.

With the league just around the corner, here at SBOTOP, we review some of the mouthwatering matchups that are sure to generate Premier League 2021 highlights.

Chelsea vs Manchester City (September 25, 2021)

The rematch between Chelsea and Manchester City is obviously a must-watch in late September.

Chelsea have gotten the better of Manchester City in recent occasions, which includes their triumph in the Champions League Final last May 30.

Kai Havertz scored the only goal in what was a tight affair as he found the back of the net three minutes before halftime when he collected a sumptuous pass from Mason Mount.

That win marked the third time that Thomas Tuchel defeated Pep Guardiola in just less than four months since the former PSG boss replaced club icon Frank Lampard last January.

Guardiola is certainly looking for revenge and this is the perfect time to do it since this game might pose huge ramifications in the Premier League table.

Arsenal vs Tottenham (September 26, 2021)

This North London Derby at the Emirates is another game to watch out for and it will happen one day after the Chelsea-Manchester City fixture.

Arsenal and Tottenham have been bitter rivals for so long. However, Tottenham have been the better club recently as they’re undefeated in five of their last six meetings.

Both teams have retooled this summer as Arsenal acquired one of the promising young centre-backs in Ben White while Tottenham appointed Nuno Espirito Santo to replace the AS Roma-bound Jose Mourinho.

Prior to their actual game on September, Arsenal and Tottenham will have a chance to feel each other out in a friendly game on August 8.

Manchester United vs Liverpool (October 23, 2021)

One of the oldest rivalries in English football will open a new chapter on October 23 as Liverpool visit Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils and the Reds will both feature a relatively new look as they have reinforced their lineups with a couple of key acquisitions.

Strengthening the backline was a point of emphasis for these two clubs as Liverpool acquired Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig while Manchester United are on the verge of prying away Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

On the other hand, the Red Devils finally secured Jadon Sancho’s signature after a long wait which will boost Manchester United’s attacking prowess.

Manchester United are undefeated in their last two meetings against Liverpool, which includes a goalless draw in the league followed by a dramatic 3-2 victory in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Manchester United vs Manchester City (November 6, 2021)

Where would the Premier League be without the good ol’ Manchester Derby right? Anytime that these two squads meet, it is sure to bring a ton of drama and fireworks.

From Bruno Fernandes and Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Maguire and Ruben Dias, to Luke Shaw and Trent Alexander-Arnold, there’s no doubt that this matchup boasts a ton of quality from both sides.

All of them have played in Euro 2020 recently so familiarity will be a thing for this matchup, and we all know that too much familiarity breeds contempt.

Surprisingly, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had Pep Guardiola’s number and the latter will be pressured to break his drought over his Norwegian counterpart.

Everton vs Liverpool (December 1, 2021)

The Merseyside Derby is going to be a tasty matchup to cap off 2021 as Liverpool will get to reunite with an old friend.

Rafael Benitez is back in the Premier League after his two-year stint with China, although he won’t be at the Reds’ coaching helm this time.

The Spaniard replaced Carlo Ancelotti last month and he’ll be tasked to bring Everton to new heights after missing out of Europe in these past few seasons.

Last term, Everton finally defeated Liverpool at Anfield for the first time since 1999 and they’ll look to defend home this time around.
