If there is one thing that we’ve learned over these past few weeks, it is that Chelsea will be a force to reckoned with in the upcoming Premier League season.
With the 2020/21 season just around the corner, the Blues have been very busy in revamping their roster, adding depth and quality to a core that finished with a Champions League berth next term.
Elsewhere in London, several clubs have done some wheeling and dealing too in an attempt to boost their Premier League 2020 odds.
Manchester City are putting their best foot forward in trying to pry away a disgruntled Lionel Messi from Camp Nou while they beefed up their backline as well.
Premier League newcomers and SBOTOP partners Leeds United have undergone a major turnover to prepare them next term while their first matchday opponents in Liverpool let go some of their young projects.
Those are some of the notable Premier League 2020 updates in the transfer market, and there’s more to that where it came from here in our latest recap.
Are Chelsea done stockpiling?
In this transfer window, the Blues have brought in some key pieces ahead of their campaign.
The entries of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner have already solidified their lethal attack and it will be further complemented with the impending arrival of Kai Havertz.
It was a major loss indeed for Bayer Leverkusen, who doesn’t offer much attacking options compared to their counterparts in Germany. However, they were compensated with £90-M in exchange, and they will try to fill in the void left by Havertz.
Lest you think that they are done retooling, Frank Lampard and team owner Roman Abramovich added more weapons to supplement their defence.
They’ve added Ben Chilwell from Leicester City in a £45-M transfer deal while former PSG skipper Thiago Silva was brought in via a free transfer. These additions will bolster their depth at the defence, who proved to be leaky at times last season.
There’s only one thing left for Chelsea that needs to be addressed. The Blues would need to figure out on who will be their main man between the sticks soon.
Kepa Arrizabalaga has not performed up to par while Willy Caballero isn’t any getting any younger.
Chelsea were once linked to Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak on a possible deal. However, there aren’t any imminent signs that it will come into fruition anytime soon.
Manchester United held at a stalemate
While Chelsea have been fortunate to acquire their targets, that isn’t the case so far with their rivals over at Old Trafford.
The Jadon Sancho saga still lives on as neither Borussia Dortmund or Manchester United have been willing to compromise on a possible transfer.
The Yellows were insistent to charge the Red Devils a massive £108-M transfer fee for it to happen. However, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn’t budging.
Instead, Manchester United may have to look elsewhere to shore up their youth-laden roster.
The Red Devils are reportedly eyeing to be in the Lionel Messi sweepstakes, while they are also targetting Ajax midfielder Donny Van de Beek.
Insiders over at Netherlands reported that the 23-year-old is “likely” to leave the Eredivisie champions this summer, paving a way for a possible move by OGS.
Manchester United are also linked with Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguillon.
Last term, the speedy Spaniard was part of Sevilla FC (on loan) who defeated the Red Devils en route to winning the Europa League championship.
The Gunners retooling their guns
Arsenal have an interesting situation that has been quite overlooked in this transfer window.
To kick off their summer, the Gunners were able to add Willian on a free transfer, which prompted occasional jokes that Arsenal is the retirement home for ex-Chelsea players.
Other than that, Mikel Arteta’s side has welcomed back William Saliba, who played for Saint-Etienne on loan last season. He has gained a ton of experience playing in Ligue 1 and he should help bolster their porous defence.
At the front, the team management has offered star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a lucrative contract that will last up to three years.
Although he has yet to put his John Hancock on the deal, the 31-year-old expressed his commitment to play for the Gunners.
Meanwhile, Matteo Guendouzi has been given a new lease of life by Mikel Arteta.
The young midfielder did not feature in the Gunners’ final 11 games last term and he had a falling out with the team after an unfortunate altercation with Brighton’s Neal Maupay.
However, all seems to be well now between him and Mikel Arteta and he will be given a chance to prove himself in the upcoming season.
Moreover, Mesut Ozil insisted that he intends to remain with Arsenal despite his lack of playing time last term.
The beleaguered midfielder has been linked with a move away from the Emirates multiple times. However, it seems that he will stay put for now.
