Tottenham Hotspur vs Sheffield United
If only Tottenham Hotspur could face Red Star Belgrade every single week. Spurs battered Red Star once again in the Champions League in midweek as they won their two meetings by an aggregate score of 9-0.
But it’s back to the Premier League for Tottenham, who are desperate to snap a four-match winless run. However, they will have their work cut out for them as they host a Sheffield United side which has been in fine form of late.
The Premier League 2019 odds have Spurs as favourites to get that much-needed win at home. But they will be foolish to underestimate the Blades, who remain undefeated away from home this season.
Talking Points
Spurs still searching for consistency
Tottenham picked up a nice morale-boosting win in midweek by beating Red Star Belgrade, 4-0. Harry Kane made his return following a brief absence, while Son Heung-Min bagged a brace to power Spurs to victory.
Getting on the scoresheet twice should be a welcome feeling for Son following his devastating experience against Everton, where his tackle seriously injured Andre Gomes.
And the big Premier League 2019 news in the aftermath of that match was that Son’s red card was rescinded, which means he will be available to face Sheffield United.
The other promising development for Spurs was that Giovani Lo Celso is finally getting up to speed after missing the first few months of the season with a hip injury. The Argentine midfielder logged in 86 minutes against Red Star and scored his first goal for Spurs to give them a 1-0 lead.
Although, Lo Celso is unlikely to start against Sheffield United after his midweek exploits. That could mean a return to the starting XI for Christian Eriksen, who came off the bench and scored in Belgrade.
Spurs were unable to sufficiently build off of their 5-0 win over Red Star last month; they followed that up with a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool and a 1-1 draw at Everton.
But they’ll be at home this time around and will have a squad that will be as healthy as it’s been for quite a while.
Blades looking sharp
Sheffield United are soaring high on their return to the Premier League. Chris Wilder’s side currently find themselves up into sixth place after an impressive 3-0 win over Burnley last weekend. John Lundstram bagged a brace as the Blades scored three on the Clarets in the first half.
Sheffield United have now gone four matches without defeat, with two wins and two draws. Their other win was a notable 1-0 home victory over Arsenal.
However, the Blades have not been quite as impressive away from Bramall Lane. They’ve won just one out of their five Premier League away matches thus far and could only draw against bottom side Watford as well as a struggling West Ham.
But on the plus side, they are one of just two teams along with Liverpool who have yet to suffer defeat away from home.
Given Tottenham’s recent inconsistency, it’s not completely out of the question that Sheffield United can once again frustrate their foes. After all, they are tied with Leicester for the best defensive record in the league thus far with just eight goals conceded.
History
Tottenham and Sheffield United have met just four times in the Premier League era. They drew both of their matches 2-2 back in the 1993-94 season. And in 2006-07, the home side won in both of their meetings.
The most recent meeting between the two came back in 2015 in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup. Tottenham won the first leg at home and went through to the final after drawing the second leg 2-2. Christian Eriksen bagged both goals for Spurs in that second leg.
Betting Tip
Tottenham Hotspur vs Sheffield United | Draw 1X2 @ 3.95 | |
November 9, 23:00 (GMT+8) |
SBOBET odds have Spurs going at 1.58 favourites at home over Sheffield United, who are priced at 5.60, while the draw is at 3.95.
I’m actually inclined to take the stalemate in this one. As good as Spurs looked against Red Star, they still have some question marks that make it hard to trust them, even at home. The added travel could also take a toll on the squad.
Meanwhile, the Blades’ defence has looked quite solid all season long. If not for a Dean Henderson error against Liverpool, they would have four clean sheets in their last five Premier League matches. I believe that backline will have just about enough to slow Spurs down and pick up a positive result in North London.
