A double strike from Dele Alli gave Spurs an historic victory at Stamford Bridge to deal a crushing blow to Chelsea’s Champions League hopes.
It’s Spurs first league win at the Bridge in 26 attempts which takes Maurico Pochettino’s fourth-placed team a massive eight points clear of the Blues. Meanwhile, in the rest of the weekend’s top flight football games Manchester City moved within a win of the title with victory at Everton, and West Ham improved the betting odds on their survival with a much needed victory over Southampton.
Chelsea 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur
Alvaro Morata headed the opener as Spurs’ keeper Hugo Lloris flapped at thin air. Spurs weren’t really at the races but then, on the stroke of half-time Christian Eriksen smacked in a beauty from 25 yards. That sparked the visitors into life and Dele Alli put them in front on 62 before wrapping it up four minutes later.
Everton 1-3 Manchester City
This one was over by the break as City eased to a three goal lead in superb style with efforts from Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling. Yannick Bolasie pulled one back for Everton with a lovely strike, but the result means Pep Guardiola’s team can win the league next week, against Manchester United of all teams!
Manchester United 2-0 Swansea City
Jose Mourinho said his side’s first half showing was perfect as they went into half-time with a two-goal advantage thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku, his 100th in Premier League, and Alexis Sanchez. The Swans fought back in the second half and were unlucky not to score; but they remain in the thick of the relegation scrap.
Arsenal 3-0 Stoke City
The Gunners’ improvement continues but it was a late show as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang broke the deadlock with a 75th minute penalty before adding a second on 86. And when the referee pointed to the spot again, Alexandre Lacazette did the honours. There’s still hope for 19th-placed Stoke, particularly if they show the spirit they did in the first half.
West Bromwich Albion 1-2 Burnley
…which is more than can be said for the poor Baggies. They surrendered this game meekly to the grateful Clarets who went two ahead after a brilliant scissor-kick volley from Ashley Barnes and a second from strike partner Chris Wood. Salomon Rondon scored a late consolation as the ground emptied.
Brighton & Hove Albion 0-2 Leicester City
The Seagulls aren’t entirely safe but they should have been when Glenn Murray had a chance to give them the lead with a late penalty. But he missed and Vicente Iborra went up the other end to score. Jamie Vardy doubled Chris Hughton’s dismay deep into injury time.
Watford 2-2 Bournemouth
The comeback kings did it again as Bournemouth recovered twice to grab a late point at Vicarage Road. Kiko and Roberto Pereyra both put the Hornets in charge but were pegged back by Josh King’s penalty and a 92nd-minute strike from the evergreen poacher Jermain Defoe.
Newcastle United 1-0 Huddersfield Town
The Magpies grabbed a late and crucial three points to lift them to within touching distance of safety after dominating for long periods. Ayoze Perez struck with just ten minutes to go to give Rafa Benitez a happy night and leave the Terriers perilously close to the drop zone.
West Ham United 3-0 Southampton
What a difference three weeks make. After being thumped by Burnley, the Hammers dished out their own punishment to the abject Saints as Marko Arnautovic scored two and Joao Mario followed with a fierce strike to put the hosts three up by the break. Southampton stay in the bottom three and it’s getting nervy.
