Liverpool vs Manchester United
Is this the biggest game in the league? History tells us it is and so do the fans. City versus United is an irksome affair while the Merseyside derby is apparently ‘friendly’.
But this one? It’s a battle between the real giants of the modern English game. Liverpool fans remember two decades of dominance pre-Premier League, while the Red Devils point to the Fergie era as an unrivalled period of excellence. And now they are almost inseparable, with Liverpool marginal favourites to win on Saturday at betting odds of 2.70 while Manchester United are 2.73.
These football games are always filled with passion which often overspills as the red mist descends. The fixture has thrown up 16 red cards in the Premier League, surpassed only by the ‘friendly derby’…maybe it’s Liverpool!
Jurgen Klopp will be without the livewire threat of Sadio Mane, who suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty with Senegal. But with Philippe Coutinho back in the fold and the pace of Mo Salah, he has plenty of attacking options.
Manchester United are keeping pace with City at the top of the table but are yet to face a top ten side, and this is the biggest test so far for Jose Mourinho’s new-look team. But he is without the height and strength of Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini and so needs to find a midfield partner for Nemanja Matic, which could be the vastly experienced Michael Carrick.
His main man Romelu Lukaku is a slight doubt, but, if fit, the big Belgian will want to prove he is no flat track bully, with a poor record against top sides, and a one-in-six record against Liverpool.
Klopp has the edge in head-to-heads with Mourinho, winning three and drawing three of their seven meetings, but both of last season’s fixtures ended in stalemate.
Who will be smiling come Saturday afternoon?
