Chile 0-0 (3-0 on pens) Portugal
Brilliant Claudio Bravo saved three penalties in a thrilling finish to take Chile deservedly through to the Confederations Cup Final.
It’s always tough for the losing team when football games are decided by penalties but it isn’t half exciting for us fans! And Bravo was the hero of the night.
Betting tips said this would be a tight game and so it was. In a match featuring the top scorers of all time for Chile and Portugal, neither Alexis Sanchez nor Cristiano Ronaldo could inspire their team to a win in 120 minutes of football; although Chile were desperately unlucky not to win in extra time.
The keepers were in charge throughout the first 90, Chile stopper Claudio Bravo denying Andre Silva to set the tone, while Eduardo Vargas couldn’t make the most of a one-on-one at the other end. Portugal keeper Rui Patricio and Bravo commanded their areas and simply couldn’t be beaten.
Four minutes into extra time Sanchez nodded inches wide and moments later Arturo Vidal headed into Patricio’s welcoming hands. Neither team wanted to give anything away but Chile’s Andre Silva was unlucky not to get a penalty when Jose Fonte trod on his foot in the penalty box. Incredibly no review! Then the South Americans came so, so close to a winner at the death when Vidal crashed his shot against the bar and Martin Rodriguez’ follow up hit the post.
Vidal smashed the first penalty of the shoot-out into the corner and when Bravo guessed right three times I guess that was justice. Mexico or Germany next.
