AC Milan 1-2 Empoli
AC Milan still can’t catch a break as they succumbed to 17th-placed Empoli to the disappointment of live betting fans in attendance at San Siro.
Betting odds had the home side winning this affair considering that they thrashed the same outfit by three goals last November. But despite dominating large portions of the first half, they weren’t able to bounce back after Empoli took a surprise lead through Levan Mchedlidze.
The Rossoneri could have levelled matters shortly after the hour with Suso on the spot following Lukasz Skorupski’s push over Mario Pasalic. However, the Empoli keeper made amends for his error by keeping out the Spaniard’s attempt – a costly miss to say the least.
Mame Thiam then scored his first goal in Italian football and doubled the lead for the visitors when he slotted home a Massimo Maccarone assist in the 67th.
Although Gianluca Lapadula halved the deficit five minutes later, they still couldn’t equalise and make a repeat of their comeback, just like how they did it in their Milan derby last week.
It was indeed fantastic defending and goalkeeping for Empoli and utter frustration for Vincenzo Montella’s side that remain winless under their new Chinese owners.
With the defeat, Milan remain in the last Europa League qualifying spot at sixth; but it was a huge hit on their chances with Fiorentina and Torino looking to stage a late push after winning against Inter (5-4) and Chievo (1-3) respectively.
Lazio, on the other hand, kept a firm grip on the fourth spot with a 6-2 drubbing of 19th-placed Palermo, courtesy of a Balde Keita hat-trick and a Ciro Immobile double. Meanwhile, Atalanta stay fifth after Mattia Caldara scored 15 minutes from time to survive a second-half Bologna threat and win, 3-2.
Juventus though are still clear favourites to win their sixth straight Scudetto as they maintained their lead on top after Paulo Dybala went on target in their 4-0 revenge over Genoa.
