A 1-1 draw isn’t a disaster for anyone, and all four teams settled for that this evening in Group B of the Confederations Cup.
The joint leaders met and the result there was a tricky football prediction to make; while in the other game Australia made nonsense of many betting tips when they earned a point against Cameroon.
Germany 1-1 Chile
Alexis Sanchez became Chile’s top scorer when he poked home after Arturo Vidal presented a chance on just six minutes. It was Vidal’s pressing that made the goal and Germany’s young team came under a lot of pressure as the first half progressed. Joachim Low’s men began to look over-run with Eduardo Vargas crashing the bar; but they drew level before the break.
It was Germany’s best move of the game and when Jonas Hector squared for Lars Stindl, the midfield man swept confidently home. And that gave the Germans some belief as they emerged for the second half with more swagger. Chile continued to threaten though with both Sanchez and Vidal coming close, but as Germany settled into the game a draw was a fair result.
Cameroon 1-1 Australia
The Socceroos grabbed a well-earned point when skipper Mark Milligan fired home confidently from the penalty spot on the hour. But Cameroon will feel they should have been out of sight after going ahead on the stroke of half-time. Andre Anguissa cleverly lobbed Aussie keeper Matt Ryan but they failed to add to their lead and paid the penalty. Newcastle target Vincent Aboubakar was the most wasteful, and that may not help the Besiktas man’s hopes of making it in the Premier League.
