Russia 3-3 Spain

A motivated Russian side proved they are more than prepared for the 2018 World Cup after fighting back twice to draw with Spain in their international friendly.

Ranked eighth in the world and playing at the back of a 15-game unbeaten run, Spain were the clear online betting favourites in the match. And they showed the reason for that as they jumped to a two-goal lead within half hour, with Barcelona defender Jordi Alba putting the visitors in control in the ninth minute.

However, Russia surprised live betting with a brilliant comeback that almost turned the betting odds upside down.

Fyodor Smolov sparked the Russian’s impressive showing with a goal on both sides of halftime, including the 70th-minute stunner that cancelled out Sergio Ramos’ second penalty and drew the game.

Ramos put Spain to a comfortable 2-0 lead on 35 minutes, converting from the spot after a Daler Kuzyaev handball. Smolov, nonetheless, pulled one back for Russia six minutes later before Aleksey Miranchuk levelled matters shortly after the break.

It was Ramos who added more frustration for the hosts as he hit from the penalty area again after he was fouled in the box. Spain’s second lead didn’t last long though, with Smolov striking from 20 yards out to earn the draw at St. Petersburg.

Smolov could have had added to his tally late in the game, and perhaps win it for Russia, but he was denied by Manchester United keeper David de Gea.

Russia, indeed, played with the desire to win, a performance which earned them the praise of Spain boss Julen Lopetegui.

“Russia showed a high level of play tonight as their players all looked extremely motivated,” the 51-year-old manager said.

It was also a great display from Spain, but they will rue the fact that they failed to make the most of their 65 percent possession in the match.

The game is Russia’s final friendly this year as they prepare to host the World Cup, while Spain are scheduled to play Germany in another friendly in the first quarter of 2018.
