Crazy Money, Striker Merry-Go-Round and More in the EPL!

countdown banner

January may be cold, but Premier League clubs made sure to heat it up for sports betting fans with several big moves before the deadline.

Sure enough, the daft and desperate looked into the transfer market in hopes of turning the betting odds around. However, even the online gambling favourites and established clubs joined in the hunt (fun?) as the January window spending hit a total of £450million, a new league record.

The highlight of deadline day, of course, is the striker merry-go-round which saw Arsenal capture Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund for £56m, and the subsequent sale of Olivier Giroud to Chelsea—who also got Roma defender Emerson Palmieri to join recently acquired Ross Barkley to their ranks.

West Ham, Crystal Palace, Swansea and Newcastle made their moves as well to add more attacking quality to their lineups. The Hammers and Eagles made late acquisitions for Jordan Hugill (Preston) and Alexander Sorloth (FC Midtjylland), respectively. Meanwhile, Andre Ayew returned to the Swans and Islam Slimani completed a loan move to Newcastle all the way from King Power Stadium.

In other big money deals, Tottenham spent £25m on PSG winger Lucas Moura while Stoke paid £14m for Galatasaray midfielder Badou Ndiaye.

While it was a busy deadline day, the whole transfer window has not been short of crazy as well.

As soon as the window opened, Liverpool made a splash and signed Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton for a world-record fee for a defender, which undoubtedly set the tone for this month’s spending. Adrien Silva, on the other hand, joined Leicester after missing the August deadline by mere seconds!

And who could forget the Arsenal-Manchester United swap which sent Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez to Old Trafford in exchange for the unwanted Henrikh Mkhitaryan?

There’s also Manchester City who banked on their foreign wealth to boost their already strong squad. They missed out on Riyad Mahrez (again), but they were able to get Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao in a club-record fee in pound sterling.

On other transfer deals, Everton added depth in their frontline with the purchase of Theo Walcott. Loan moves of Inter’s Joao Mario to West Ham, Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge to West Brom and Barcelona’s Gerard Deulofeu to Watford also highlighted what has been an outrageous month for the English top-flight.
