Sevilla vs Atletico Madrid
With a quarter of the season gone, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid both find themselves tied for third place in the La Liga table. Although, both clubs have played one more game than the top two of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Atleti — the third favourites to win the title behind Barca and Real according to La Liga 2019 odds — should probably be a few more points and places better off in the table as they’ve struggled to pick up wins in recent weeks.
They will have another tough test ahead of them as they face a Sevilla side which is always a handful at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.
Talking Points
Sevilla’s home win streak
Sevilla are coming off a 1-1 draw away to Valencia in midweek. After taking the lead through Lucas Ocampos, they conceded a late goal which saw them fail to go level with Barcelona atop the table.
Prior to that draw, Sevilla had won five of their last six matches in all competitions, with all five of their wins coming at home.
While they haven’t faced the strongest competition — APOEL Nicosia, Levante, F91 Dudelange, and Getafe — it’s still notable that Sevilla have kept four consecutive clean sheets.
And on the other end of the pitch, Ocampos has been in superb form. The Argentine winger leads the team with four goals this season, including two in his last two outings. Add his exploits with the national team during the previous international break, and he has scored in six goals in his last eight matches.
With strikers Luuk de Jong and Javier Hernandez yet to provide consistent goalscoring for Sevilla this season, Ocampos will once again be Sevilla’s top attacking threat against Atleti.
Ocampos will look to recreate the success departed wide forward Pablo Sarabia had against Atletico. Sarabia scored three goals in his last four meetings against Los Colchoneros.
Atleti keep dropping points
Atletico Madrid currently have 20 points after 11 matches, but they really should have a few more. They’ve drawn four of their last five La Liga fixtures, two of which were away from home against bottom-half sides in Real Valladolid and Deportivo Alaves.
They took the lead through Alvaro Morata against Alaves but conceded a brilliant Lucas Perez strike in the 83rd minute. They also conceded late in a 1-1 draw at home to Valencia.
Morata has been in fine form for Atleti of late, creating his share of La Liga 2019 highlights. He’s now scored in three consecutive matches, including the last two in La Liga.
Atletico have certainly needed Morata’s resurgence, especially with young starlet Joao Felix still missing with an ankle injury. Diego Costa continues to struggle — he has just two league goals this season, one coming from the penalty spot — although manager Diego Simeone is still starting him.
Angel Correa has also stepped up in a big way in Joao Felix’s absence. The Argentine has started the last three games and has assisted in Atleti’s last three league goals.
Meanwhile, defence remains a real strength for Los Colchoneros. They’ve conceded just two goals in their last nine matches in all competitions.
History
Sevilla and Atleti have been remarkably evenly-matched in their meetings over the years. Since 1993, Sevilla hold the slight edge with 19 wins, Atleti have 17, and there have been 17 draws. Two of those draws came last season as both of their games ended 1-1.
Sevilla came out on top in both of their Copa del Rey quarter-final ties in 2018. But in La Liga, Atleti won three in a row prior to last year’s draws. Moreover, Atletico have lost just once in their last 11 league matches against Sevilla (seven wins, three draws).
Atletico have also won four times in the league at the Sanchez Pizjuan since 2013, while Sevilla have won just once during that same time. They thrashed Sevilla 5-2 back in 2018, with Antoine Griezmann netting a hat-trick.
Betting Tip
Sevilla vs Atletico Madrid | Atletico Madrid Asian Handicap +0.25 @ 1.85 | |
November 03, 01:30 (GMT+8) |
SBOBET odds slightly favour Sevilla at 2.41 to win, with Atleti priced at 3.15 and a draw at 2.96. Given Atletico’s current form, another stalemate against Sevilla looks very likely. However, the visitors are also the more likely to win of the two, as their recent head-to-head track record shows.
So that’s why I’m tipping Atleti on the Asian Handicap. I just don’t see Sevilla’s attack doing enough to beat Atleti and their imposing defence. A draw will still get you half the winnings, and you win in full with an away victory.
