La Liga: Los Blancos Could Tighten Their Grip On Their Lead Over Barcelona!

Espanyol vs Real Madrid

Real Madrid head to Catalonia on Sunday night hoping to strengthen their hold on the La Liga top spot when they face bottom club Espanyol.

Espanyol vs Real Madrid is the final match of the weekend and it’s a huge game for both.

The hosts are rooted at the bottom of the table, eight points from safety and they are drinking in the last chance saloon.

Surely another defeat would make their task too big to overcome and the latest Espanyol vs Real Madrid betting odds don’t hold out much hope, offering 1.45 on a defeat for Aberlado’s men.

The visitors will be ruthless in their pursuit of another win and they have the momentum and a real chance to wrestle the title from the Catalonians. So Espanyol must fight like tigers if they are to stay alive.

Talking Points

Hazard makes the difference for Los Blancos

The return to fitness of 2019 marquee signing Eden Hazard has added that extra piece of quality Zinedine Zidane was looking for, to turn his title chasers to real contenders.

His poise and vision in an advanced midfield position allows the players around him to express themselves and he is capable of winning a match on his own as any Chelsea fan would testify.

Los Blancos have looked imperious in picking up four wins since the return and the arrival of Hazard has taken some of the heat off Real’s senior players.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has scored 8 goals in La Liga this season
Sergio Ramos celebrates after scoring a free-kick goal against Mallorca

Not that captain Sergio Ramos ever worries about the pressure his role brings. As a centre back he’s the club’s second top scorer and in Real’s toughest assignment so far, Ramos led his side to a 1-2 victory away to Europe chasing Real Sociedad after scoring a penalty which took his total to eight for the season while top scorer Karim Benzema bagged his 17th.

Zidane’s side has hit top form at exactly the right time and reigning champions

Barcelona have been feeling the heat, knowing that only wins will do after they drew a blank in a goalless draw away to Sevilla.

If the two giants of Spanish football are neck-and-neck at the end of the season then the title is Real Madrid’s courtesy of a winning head-to-head position.

Returning Raul is Espanyol’s last chance

Aberlado has a huge task on to lift his players up for this clash.

They won four points from their first two games after the restart beating Alaves and earning an impressive point away to Getafe, but lost out to Levante in a disappointing 1-3 reversal and then wilted in a 1-0 defeat to Real Betis.

With the worst points tally and the worst goal difference in the league, things are looking grim for Espanyol.

But there is a bright light on the horizon which gives them a little hope since they will be lifted by the return of star striker Raul de Tomas, who has recovered from his knee injury and will hope to add to the four goals he scored in seven games since his move from Benfica in the winter transfer window.

He’s a product of the Real Madrid academy and is the one player who could give Ramos something to think about.

History

The head to heads are worryingly one sided for the hosts.

Real have won 39 of the 53 games, played since 1994, with six draws and eight wins for Espanyol.

Though Espanyol had a 1-0 win at the RCDE Stadium back in 2018, and that would be just the job for the bottom club right now!

Betting Tip

??
Espanyol vs Real Madrid Total Goals 2-3 @ 2.04
June 29, 04:00 (GMT+8)

Well, Los Blancos are at 1.45 to win here at SBOBET, with the draw at 4.60 and Espanyol at 6.20.

Zinedine Zidane’s side has restarted in phenomenal form, winning all four and scoring ten goals while conceding two.

They will be without the suspended Luka Modric, but the Madrid giants have a wealth of talent to draw on unlike their hosts.

ZZ might take the opportunity to rest one or two of his key players with a big match against Getafe to come next week.

But I can’t see anything other than an away win, though the margin is less clear, if Espanyol put up a good fight then 0-2 or 1-2 looks likely.

In the meantime, enjoy the weekend’s football and we’ll be back here on Sunday night with all the best Espanyol vs Real Madrid highlights.
