International Friendly: Germany Have a Point to Make Against Peru

They were World champions in 2014 but the last decade has not been so kind to Germany, the European giants who have failed to make the knockout phases of the last two World Cups.

When they crashed out of the 2018 tournament it was Germany’s first exit at the group stage since 1938, then it happened again four years later. So International Friendly: Germany vs Peru is a chance for the hosts to get their house in order before they embark on their next major campaign.

It was a surprise when Germany failed to make it out of the group stage in Qatar but not a major shock, and now is the time for head coach Hansi Flick to begin to restore Die Mannschaft’s reputation as a world power. But they come up against a Peru team with a relatively new manager, a fresh mood and little to lose.     

It’s a fascinating clash for the SBOTOP football team and fans to get their teeth into and one which Germany really need to win to set their new agenda.

Germany reset for Euro 2024   

There were plenty of Bundesliga stars shining in Qatar but sadly few of them were playing for Germany. And it was a tournament former Bayern boss Flick would like to put behind him: “The World Cup didn’t exactly give us a boost,” he said. “So a bit of humility is needed now and again. Nevertheless we will prepare very professionally for this tournament and then we’ll see what comes out in the end.”

Flick will be without two of his key players for the upcoming friendlies against Peru and Belgium. Bayern’s attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala has picked up a hamstring strain, while Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan is taking time off having just become a father for the first time.  

Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich has been named captain of a team which includes Borussia Dortmund’s Marius Wolf for the first time, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz who is back in the squad for the first time since 2021. 33 year old Thomas Muller has been left out as Flick looks for younger players to lead the line, though 30 year old Niklas Fullkrug will compete with Timo Werner and Chelsea’s Kai Havertz for a place up front.    

The pre-match Germany vs Peru betting odds are backing a home win and Flick has the armoury to get the result he needs to turn the corner. 

So far so good for Reyneso

Los Incas of Peru have been managed by Juan Reynoso since August 2022 after former coach Ricardo Gareca stepped down when Peru lost a play-off against Australia and missed out on Qatar 2022. Reynoso had managed in club football in Mexico and he faced the Mexican national team in his first game with Peru, losing 1-0. But since then he has overseen victories against El Salvador, 4-1, and Paraguay and Bolivia, both by 1-0 score lines. 

In the absence of the experienced Christian Cueva,  Celta Vigo midfielder Renato Tapia will have a key role in Reynoso’s team and Cagliari striker Gianluca Lapadula will be another player to watch in the Germany vs Peru highlights package; he scored in Peru’s big win over El Salvador to make it eight goals from 24 games. And MLS fans will see that Seattle Sounders striker Raul Ruidiaz has been called up to bolster the attack.

Reynoso is doing okay so far but this is his biggest test as Peru boss.

History

Germany are four times World Cup winners and three times European champions and Flick’s task is to take his team deep into Euro 2024, so while this game is a friendly he is looking for progress.     

Peru’s best performances in the World Cup came in 1970 and 1978 when they reached the quarter finals on both occasions, and Los Incas were also Copa America champions in 1939 and 1975.

These two teams have met just once before, in a friendly back in 2018, when Germany won 2-1 as Nico Schulz scored an 85^th minute winner.

In terms of recent form Peru have won four and lost two of the last six games while Germany have won two, drawn two and lost two. And while Peru have won the last three, all of these victories were on home soil.

Betting Tip

Germany have drifted to 12^th place in the FIFA Rankings, just ten places above Peru and that makes this an interesting match. But the hosts are hot favourites at odds of 1.28 to win, while Peru can be backed at 8.20 and the draw is 4.55, and I think Flick will get the result he wants.
