Georgia vs Republic of Ireland
The Republic of Ireland take a trip to Georgia on Saturday with one clear objective…another three points.
Martin O’Neill’s men are joint top of Group D, with Serbia on 12 points, after six World Cup qualification football games. And another win will preserve the crucial four-point gap to third place.
Ireland fans and the sports betting world expect a positive result, the Republic are 1.75 to win or 2.03 with a -0.75 handicap while betting odds on a home win are at 4.60 with the draw at 3.45.
While Ireland have won all eight previous meetings, Georgia can be sticky opponents. Coach Vladimir Weiss has relied on experienced skipper Jaba Kankava to organise the rearguard from his defensive midfield position, and they have drawn three of their fixtures, most recently in Moldova. And Ireland’s last three wins over their hosts were by a single-goal margin.
Last time out, a late Jon Walters goal grabbed Ireland a point in a tough encounter with Austria, but O’Neill is sweating on the fitness of the Burnley striker who has an ankle problem. But Walters’ club team-mate Robbie Brady has started the Premier League season in scintillating form, and if he can replicate that at the Boris Paichadze Stadium, Irish eyes will be smiling again.
Seamus Coleman grabbed the only goal in the return fixture and the Irish will certainly accept a single-goal win again. With the chasers, Wales and Austria, ready to pounce if Georgia spring a surprise, there’s a lot riding on this one.
