Denmark 1-1 Germany
A late, late goal by Joshua Kimmich gave Germany a share of the spoils in a hard fought tussle in Brondby to send the visiting fans home happy.
Christian Eriksen looked to have given Denmark bragging rights over their illustrious neighbours until Kimmich’s smash and grab, which denied Age Hareide’s men a memorable win.
Of all the football games in the proud Danes history, the 1992 European Championships Final win against Germany stands above all else, and it looked like they’d confounded the football betting pundits again for most of this match. Denmark started the game more brightly and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 18 minutes as Spurs Christian Eriksen found space to fire low into the corner.
As expected Germany came storming back, with a succession of corners, and Sandro Wagner and Leon Goretzka were denied as the home defence blocked their efforts bravely. Then senior man Julian Draxler tried his luck from distance to see his shot smartly saved.
Eriksen tried to double the score from a free kick early in the second half, but sent his effort too high. And then on 65 minutes, as Denmark looked comfortable, Lukas Lerager came off the bench to replace Eriksen. But soon after Liverpool’s Emre Can fired a warning shot at the Danes, coming mighty close from distance.
It took until the 88th minute for Germany to breach the Danes’ defence, but when Lars Stindl picked out Kimmich in the penalty box the young midfielder fired home.
Wins against Germany are very rare and this was hard luck on Denmark, but they can take plenty away as they get back to business in the World Cup qualifiers.
