Gabon just witnessed some of the best football to date

countdown banner

What do you call football games that keep you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails and sweating gallons? We call them nowadays as “classics”, and I think Gabon just witnessed one right now.

Football betting websites were buzzing by the time the Burkina Faso-Egypt game was decided on penalties. It was an absolute thriller of a game that exemplified the best of the opposing schools of attack and defence.

I’m sure many are now believers of the Pharaohs and will bet online in their favour when their final opponent is known.

Burkina Faso 1-1 (3-4 on pens) Egypt

Underdogs Burkina Faso came out of the game running with their exciting brand of attacking football. They didn’t allow Egypt to have a lot of breathing room as they took 12 corners and 19 shots, compared to the Pharaohs’ three corners and five shot attempts.

Based on how the two sides performed in this semi-final, some will go so far as argue that Burkina Faso deserved to win more than Egypt. While a good number of statistics support that argument, it cannot be denied that it was the defending Pharaohs who struck first.

A nice string of passes that started from the Egyptian backline resulted in a nice Mohamed Salah goal that was taken at the edge of the penalty box. The Stallions and their supporters didn’t need to wait long for an equaliser, however, as a beautiful Charles Kabore lob headed straight to Aristide Bance for a goal right in front of Essam El Hadary.

Burkina Faso tried to win the game in extra time, but the tough Egyptian defence didn’t allow their loss to come easy. When it came to penalties, it was Captain El Hadary who took the burden of bringing his nation to the final.

The penalty shootout score was 3-3, and Egypt needed a save to give them the lead. Kouakou Koffi, the opposing goalkeeper, was tapped to take the shot. El Hadary managed to stop his shot as well as Bertrand Traore’s attempt after Amr Warda slotted the winning pen.

Expect the Egyptians to apply the same defensive football they’ve been so successful with when they face either Cameroon or Ghana in the final.
